what is the purpose of this besides using it on other carriers? is this the same as jailbraking a phone?

unlocking a phone means to "make it free" from being stuck into one carrier...
jailbreaking a phone is to let you into the OS..."operating system"
They're both VERY useful when it comes to the iPhone!!
