Approximately 550 students and staff at Aoyama Gakuin university, a university in Japan, will be receiving free iPhones courtesy of SoftBank. This free iPhone plan is part of the universities Mobile & Net Society Education and Training Program which will help aid in finding students via GPS. This will determine if students are actually going to class or not and if on campus.

Re: Tracking students via iPhone
I have the freebie version of the MotionX GPS app for the iPhone, which has a track capability (where you can track yourself, not others), which I'm cool with, but I don't need anyone knowing where I am unless I want them to know. Not that I do anything shady, but it just seems creepy to me.

Re: Tracking students via iPhone
im pretty someone can find a way to hack that GPS tracking thing. or maybe if you just simply jailbreak it, that thing will disappear as well.
but for myself, i wouldn't be accepting a free thing in exchange for my privacy.
