What kinds of things can be done to keep the iPhone from running out of battery power as quickly as it does? I know that for iPods diminishing the back lighting can do the trick - does this also work for iPhones? I also heard that there is an application that helps conserve battery power. If this is true, could someone help point me in the right direction?

    Thanks!

As a forum newbie, I'm not yet allowed to post links. If you Google for "Apple iPhone battery tips" you will get to an Apple page all about this.

Re: How to keep the iPhone from running out of batteries quickly

One way is if you have 3G in your area NOT too use it as Much since it's the data intensive Apps that use up most of the juice, Since I just now got 3G in Alaska and My Iphone is Jail Broken but I noticed that when I use data intense Apps such as Youtube or anytype of streaming Apps like AOL or yahoo+ if possible you dont need the screen too Bright as too this will drain some of your battery also. Keep your Iphone in Sleep Mode when your not using it. Thats a few ways too keep your Iphone up n running W/O having too worry if its gonna Die before you get off work or have somewhere too go.

ofcourse screen brightness is one of the major power consumer in iPhone, Data intense application also does so.

i would suggest if the signal in your area is week then it would drain lot of power catching the signal so make sure the service provide there has good signal.

i would also suggest you keep the auto locking ON so that way you can save on battery power.

Re: How to keep the iPhone from running out of batteries quickly

Thanks, everyone! I'm guessing then that the majority of the problem is, indeed, a weak signal. I only get two or three bars in my house and where I work, so most of the time the phone is probably working to optimize what is available. I'm not planning on changing my phone, service provider, or residence any time soon, however, so I guess my question now is - how can I improve the signal, if that is at all possible?

The more features you turn off, the less power it uses. Just scroll through your settings to see what you need and what you don't; for instance, the feature that constantly downloads your e-mail can be a huge drain on the battery. You can set it to check for new messages less often or even turn it off completely (which is what I do - I just check my e-mail through the Safari browser).

What has worked for me is to just not use any apps whatsoever... apps are the number 1 problem of your iphone dying on you.

ONE Way to Keep Your Battery from Dying is too Keep your Phone in EDGE instead of 3G mode since THAT is what will Drain your Battery the Most. I know this because we JUST got 3G here in Alaska and I keep it on when I'm @ Work and I usually get about a good 8hrs or So of battery Power since I also keep my phone in Sleep Mode also.

Re: How to keep the iPhone from running out of batteries quickly

    Hi All,

I have had my iPhone since day one in Australia and it has been adequate in terms of its battery usage for day to day activities.

However in the last 24 hours something has changed and I don't know what.

During this time I noticed that the iPhone is quite warm to the touch, this typically only happens when using 3G and GPS to navigate for a period of time in Google Maps.

To test this I put the phone in flight mode to disable all of the 2G,3G,Wifi and GPS services, and sure enough the iPhone cooled right down again.

I have installed no new application
I have changed no settings on the iPhone

However today the battery went from 100% to 10% in just over 4 hours, during this time:
    - No calls were made or received
    - No sms were sent or received
    - No wifi usage was done
    - No GPS usage was done
    - No specific Optus 3G data was done (ie: no browsing, etc.)
    - Push email was operating over Optus 3G to my work mail server

    Something is very wrong here.

I have restarted the phone, and it has made no difference.

I am just recharging the phone via USB and have disabled Push email and will let it run again for 4 hours or so and check the battery usage.

I have made a pre-emptive Genius appointment at the Apple Store at Chadstone tomorrow just in case none of this testing changes anything

Check out Wikimap in the app store. It allows users to save open street maps (osm) for offline map navigation. Offline mode means no 3-G or Edge access. This significantly extends battery life.
