    Re: iphone vs nokia n97

    Hi Ando,

It really depends on what you need the phone for. I own both and use my iphone (free from my company) for my work stuff, and my n97 for personal stuff. Here are the differences I have found with both phones (from personal experience), and hopefully this will help. I will list everything I can think of as of this moment so forgive me if I seem to be listing the pros and cons randomly.

The iphone has a smoother touch interface due to the capacitive touch screen but I find it faster to type on the physical keyboard on the n97 for texting, emails, etc. The iphone music player (ipod) is easier to use in my opinion due to my being used to my old ipod. However, it is easier to transfer music to my n97 via the external micro sd card. The camera on the n97 is nicer too. It is easier to cut and paste on the n97 (and I do it a lot). I have tons of ebooks in different formats and I can easily open them in the external microsd card of the n97. In contrast, I have to email myself a pdf attachment on my desktop in order for me to read a pdf document on the iphone which is not too hard to do. I haven't tried tethering my laptop on my iphone, but I've successfully shared my 3G connection to my laptop from my n97 via a usb cable. By the way, the n97 somehow shows 3.5G on the upper left corner. I haven't bothered checking the actual network speed. The apple app store definitely blows away the OVI store with thousands of apps which is why I plan to develop iphone applications so I can sell them and hopefully make a little bit of extra cash. The n97 is also built for multitasking where you can open several apps at once and run them all at the same time. The iphone can run a few apps concurrently (such as ipod music while texting). Personally, I think the n97 is more configurable than the iphone both software-wise and hardware-wise. The n97 has a replaceable battery and of course the microsd card while you are stuck with what the iphone has. The battery life of the iphone sucks (even with the 3.0 upgrade). I usually need to charge the iphone every night vs 2 days on the n97. Keep in mind though that I use wifi and bluetooth on both phones extensively, which you might not be doing. Those drain power really quickly. Now for a software example - the n97 lets you choose any mp3 file as a ringtone, whereas in iphone you would have to convert the mp3 in apple format (m4a) then rename it to a .m4r extension, then sync it via itunes to make it into a ringtone. In my opinion, the iphone will be easier to use out of the box for the regular user, but a techie will find both phones just the same in terms of ease of use. I had a whole bunch of problems when the n97 first came out, but since the firmware upgrade, the bugs have dramatically gone down. I've had a few crashes on both phones, but from my experience with dozens of smartphones and PDAs (starting from the handspring/palms), crashing is normal on ALL smartphones as it happens from time to time.

I'm sure there are a lot more differences as well as similarities but these are just a few I can think of right now. As I said, it really boils down to personal preferences. I'm not a fan of any brand but just smartphones in general. If I had to choose only one, I would choose the n97, but only because I prefer the flexibility which I find important in a smartphone. Most people will probably choose the iphone because it is more fun and cooler to use. I think for the average phone user the iphone is a better pick. For the business / smartphone user, the n97 is the better choice.

If your comfortable with the Nokia, stick with that. Iphones are like mini computers and have often tendencies of freezing up and/or causing problems.

I've had an iphone since 2006 and I've never had a "freezing" issue. The iphone is superior in every way to any other phone. It is like a computer, yes. To be honest though, I like my iphone better then my laptop.

Well...You could have an Iphone that breaks all the time but looks good...or have a working phone. That's just my opinion.

everyone has a iphone. I got a nokia e71x and couldnt be happier. People see how thin it is, and mistake it for a blackberry some times. I love this phone.

    Re: iphone vs nokia n97

I heard a lot about the Nokia 5800 being an 'iPhone killer', and when it was bundled with 'Comes with Music' I dutifully stood in line outside the London Regent Street flagship store to buy one.

Owning an E71, and comparing the 5800 side by side with an iPhone 3G, I was so dissappointed in the 5800 that I sold if within 48 hours of taking possession - it was, in my view, garbage.

I would therefore urge extreme caution to anyone who is thinking that the N97 will be able to take on the iPhone 3Gs. Such a thing might be possible; the E71 is a top-quailty piece of kit, but if the N97 is in the mould of a souped-up 5800 then I don't have much hope for it.

It would seem that Nokia has two distint parts to its business; that part that produces lovingly crafted, high quality kit like the E71 for the business and consumer market, and that part which focuses solely on consumers and pumps out gimmicky rubbish like the 5800!

    Regards..

    Steve..
