There isn't a difference appearance wise. All the straight talk sims that I have seen look the same... i hear a lot of stuff on the net about the sims being "branded... a lot of the cheaper priced phones that ST offer are branded with the tracfone logo and etc... just like the phones you would get from ATT or verizon... not sure if it has something to do with that fully or partially...

one theory I came up with is that since the sim was activated with that phones IMIE number that is "branded" by tracfone it locks it only to that phone... the Nokia E71 is not branded by ATT or tracfone so i think it keeps the sim unlocked when its activated... not exactly sure... i have some friends that are on the inside at ATT... some in sales... some in the tech support and my cousin actually does the networking junk... so i think i'm going to ask her if she knows the details behind how tracfone and att phones work with the network... she's been with them for about 12 years so she should have some knowledge to share with me that i can in return post on here... so if you have any questions that I cant think of... just shoot me a PM or email or something...

Just wanted to say that I followed the stuff in this guide and I was able to get my iPhone 3G 8g up and running on Straight Talk in a few hours. I have everything worked except for MMS, and I think I can get that fixed very shortly. Special thanks to Samuel for all the answers and help.

I have a jailbroken iphone 3G, and I have a couple of questions for Salyers and samuel8614.

- You've mentioned that you got the Nokia E71 at WallMart. I went to several stores around me and they did not have that model. Is the only place to get it from the straight talk web site?
- Is the sim card the same dimension as that on the iphone 3g or does it have to be clipped?
- Will visual email work with the straight talk sim in the iphone?
- What can you do with a Nokia without a sim card, can it be unlocked and sold? Would be a shame if it could not be used somehow.

Walmart is the only retail store that carries the straight talk phones. You can get them from their website as well...

The sim cards are the exact same size as ATT sims. The Nokia E71 was once sold and used by ATT.

The only full feature you don't get is visual voicemail. I've yet to do any research into that area.

Regarding the unused Nokia... I saved mine and put it up in my closet. I never know if my phone is gonna die... get lost or etc so i am using it as a backup. I know some of the phones ST uses are "branded" (I.E. Has an ATT or Tracfone splash screen when starting up) and the sim is locked to only that IMIE number. I'm not sure about the Nokia... maybe some digging on google or something can yield some answers.

Thanks Samuel8614 - you are very helpful! Just another couple of questions if you wouldn't mind...

- I did mean visual voicemail and not visual email. Since you don't have visual voicemail with the ST sim, how do you get the voicemail? And how do you get notified? That is such a nice feature, it would be great if it worked as well.

- I take it you can use your old phone number with the ST. But do you first have to terminate your agreement with ATT? I'm already past the two year contract, so I wouldn't need to pay any penalty. Also if for some reason I wanted to go back to ATT, i.e. go back to using their sim card, could I still do that and also get back my old phone number?

- I do quite of bit of traveling. Is roaming the same with both sims and services?

You get the standard "BADGE" for a voicemail with the applicable number of voicemails you have. when you go to your phone and tap the voicemail screen button on the far right it just dials your voicemail for you.

if you are technically out of your contract with ATT then you should be able to send your phone number to ST without hassle. BEWARE that the ST people are usually moderate or less in english...lol

The ST service uses ATT networks so you should have all the same as you did before...

One more quick question Samuel...

I'm still running OS 3.1.2 and as I've mentioned, it is jailbroken.

Do I have to unjailbreak it before changing sims and downloading the carrier file? Will it work with OS 3.1.2?

I was wondering if anyone here had tried getting ST ATT sim to work on an Android or Windows 7 phone.

I have a iphone 3g that is on F.W 4.2.1 and Baseband 5.15.04 so i know i'm unlockable
@ the moment, but when i put my straight talk sim in in alerts me that i have new
voicemails... Is this a good sign???

jailbroken or not... you can download carrier files and modified APN files... if you want to have the MMS option... it will need to be jailbroken

well hit the voicemail option on your phone... you wont have visual voicemail so when you hit the screen key... it should dial your ST voicemail and you can see whether you have any or not...

As for the unlockable... i didn't unlock... just jailbroke my phone... technically you dont even have to do that if you are happy with just voice and txting... if you want data just install the APN carrier file thats posted on here and viola you get data/internet... MMS requires jailbreaking and etc

I played a bit with a windows 7 phone a few days ago and I found it rather compelling. Unlike Android which is basically a knockoff of the iphone in terms of UI, W7 phone takes a whole different approach - and I found it compelling.

Back to the iphone and ST. Let's say I make the changes to the iphone to run ST, and for some reason I wanted to go back to using ATT, what would you have to do to reverse those setting. Easy enough to change the sim, but how would you reset the carrier settings?

all you would need to do is put your ATT sim in and connect to ITUNES... it should detect it... if not... you can get the ATT carrier files off of the net fairly easy...

I've ordered a Nokia e71 from ST and will be trying out the switch as soon as I get it.

So everything here has pretty much been about Straight Talk.
What about Tracfone?
I have iphone 2g and have had t-mobile forever, but now I have no income and I qualify for safelink wireless which is a so many minute a month free version of tracfone.
They give you a free phone and sim with it.
I'd really like to use it on my iphone.
I know they lock to the phone that you activate them too, but If I initially register it with my iphone will it work? Will it still recharge the minutes normally?

finally jailbroke my 3g 4.2.1
ive went into cydia and downloaded winterboard and searched for supreme preferences and all i can find is Supreme Gruppled but it wont let me install it. im lost lol
