Another patent has been filed and this time it is with Apple. Apple filed a patent on its solar cells which is responsible for maintaining power requirements for the iPhone and iPod.
This new patent for solar cells will allow the device to decide when the iPhone or iPod needs charging and will come with a battery monitor to determine if the battery needs charging. The choice is up to the user where the solar cells are placed, the front or the back.

Re: Apple Files Patent on Solar Cells
This is a great and novel idea, but solar cells are likely to add weight and cost and I very much doubt that one could get a complete charge even if leaving the iPhone in the sun all day long. I think that this kind of technology is probably best kept as a third party add-on (that is unless it is extremely cheap to implement in which case, why not!?! Even a 5% reduction of electricity use by all mobile users would make a tremendous difference on the power grid).
