I just recently upgraded to an iPhone 3G-S from an antique Nokia. Lots of new features and such on the iPhone, but the documentation was less helpful than it could have been. Matter of fact, it was downright sparse. So I went looking for more information...

I've rated each title from one to five grins (there being no stars available...) These are my subjective ratings. I'm brand new to the iPhone, but I've worked in the computer field for better than thirty years, so I know a little.

    iPhone for Dummies
by Edward C. Baig and Bob LeVitus, Wiley Publishing, 2007, ISBN: 978-0-470-17469-2.

This dated tome is pretty handy for folks with little or no experience with modern cell/smartphones (like me...) The Dummies series of books are a little basic-basic, but they do present the essential information in a humorous, less-technical manner. The first edition focuses on the original iPhone. Get the second edition if you have an iPhone 3G or 3G-S. This book gets a one-grin rating mainly because it's a bit out of date.

    iPhone for Dummies, 2nd Edition
by Edward C. Baig and Bob LeVitus, Wiley Publishing, 2008, ISBN: 978-0-470-42342-4

The new and improved Dummies book for iPhone users. This one covers both the original iPhone and the newer 3G models. Essential information, less-technical presentation, yada, yada. Seriously, I like Dummies books. This one is no exception.

    iPhone 3G Portable Genius
by Paul McFedries and David Pabian, Wiley Publishing, 2008, ISBN: 978-0-470-42348-6.

Great book! This volume gives the low-down on pretty much everything you really need to know about the iPhone without getting bogged down in the technical minutia. The technical level of the presentation is such that while you don't need to be an IT professional to use it, you do need to be able to handle a little light thinking. Highly recommended.

iPhone & iPod Touch Superguide, 3rd Edition
by Kelly Turner (Editor), Macworld, 2009

The mother lode of iPhone information. Deep enough, but still readable. If it ain't in this book, you probably don't need to know it.

    iPhone Life magazine
    Thaddeus Computing, ISSN: 1528-5456.

iPhone Life magazine is a little trendy for my taste, but it's got quite a bit of good information. It's a little shallow in its coverage, due to it's magazine format. But I think that's offset by the fact that they cover a wide range of topics. I'm not really into 'lifestyle' marketing, but this is worth a look.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are probably more books and stuff available. These are just the ones I happened to turn up with a quick online search. Most of them should be available at your local bookstore. Or you can probably find them free online like I did.

    Hope this helps...
