I am a non-tech guy who has been a T-Mobile To Go customer for a few years now and I have zero complaints...service is good and I love just buying those pre-paid cards on my schedule!
As time progressed however, I felt more of a need to access e-mail via my mobile and this is tough in the pre-paid world!
I believe, the only carrier who offers e-mail in a pay as you go situation is AT&T?
My questions to you experts are:
1. Is AT&T the only way to go?
2. Can I simply buy an AT&T SIM card and then shop for a phone?
3. Is a SIM card just a SIM card? Do I need a special SIM card if I'm looking to buy a smart phone?
I realize that these questions may be rudimentary but a guy has got to start somewhere!
Thanks so much!

Re: Pay As You Go Questions?
Answers to your questions:
1. AT&T is one of the best options to go with. I believe you would have to purchase a feature card (almost like airtime, or minutes) to use email with prepaid.
2. Normally the SIM card comes in the package with the Prepaid AT&T phones. So there would be no need for you to buy a SIM card separately.
3. You don't need anything special to get a smartphone. All SIM cards are the same. However, in order to use a smartphone on a prepaid basis, you would have to buy the phone at full retail price (sometimes ranging from $200 - $500+) depending on the device you wanted.
