Hi. quick question. tried searching the forums but couldn't find any answers.
My family recently switched to AT&T and I got the samsung eternity. i'm not paying any additional charges per month (for tv, internet, navigation, whatever) but somewhere I read that instant messaging and mobile email were free to use. is this true?

Re: mobile email and IM
The way it's been explained to me is if your phone comes with Mobile Email already preloaded, it does not use data to use it. If your phone comes with an IM already preloaded you can log in without using data and there are no additional costs for either service, except you have to remember that IM's count as text messages and they can add up quick.
I know this is true cause a friend of mine used her phone for Yahoo email as well as Yahoo Messenger and she didn't have internet on her phone, or she didn't use it rather and was never charged for it.

Re: mobile email and IM
Email counts as data and instant messages count as, well, messages.
Billing
Q. How much does it cost to use Mobile Email?
A. Standard data charges apply to open your inbox and view any messages. A MEdia package is recommended, or Media Basic Bundle is recommended for cost savings. All Mobile Email alerts are free.
Q. Will email automatically download to my phone?
A. No. You control how much email is downloaded to your phone. Only the headers (from and subject line) of your emails are downloaded when you view your inbox. From your inbox, you can select which e-mails you want to download your phone. You will only be charged for the information you request to see.
Q. I am concerned about paying for spam?
A. Only the headers (from and subject line) of your emails are sent to your phone when you view your inbox. From your inbox, you can select which e-mails you want to read on your phone. You will only be charged data charges for the information you request to see.
Q. Am I charged for "new mail" alerts?
A. No. New mail alerts are free. You will be charged standard data charges once you choose to view your inbox from the alert. Note that alerts are not available with all email services.
