Can you transfer Verizon phone number thats not in use anymore to ATT

I had a verizon phone but got shut off a couple months ago, i called it and its still not in use, and i'm planning on switching to AT&T within a couple days and I was wondering if it would be possible to switch numbers even if its not mine.

I was told from a friend that they can switch numbers even if it was through verizon but it may cost more, but the numbers not technically mine anymore, but its nobodies at the same time.

If someone could reply back that would be wonderful. thank you.

Re: Can you transfer Verizon phone number thats not in use anymore to ATT

No. You have to own the phone number to port it to another service. Verizon will not release a number just for someone to have. It doesn't work that way.
Just because no one owns the number now, does not mean that you can get it.
If you don't own the number, there is NO way for AT&T to get the number for you to use. They have to use a number from their number pool.
