Hi, I searched long and hard to decide what phone I wanted, and eventually decided on the Samsung Captivate (Samsung Galaxy S internationally), I shelled out the few hundred dollars to get it with AT&T, and signed a new 24 month long contracts. Within 5 days, I had water damaged it (by spilling no more than a sip of beer on it), and now it is not working. It will show the AT&T white screen on startup, but not boot past that and automatically shut off. I have friends who have resurrected phones from water damage by putting them in a bag of uncooked rice, or silica gel packets to take out the moisture, this hasn't worked for me however. The worst part is barely any water/beer even got in the phone, enough so that I just wiped my phone off and didn't think it was that big of a deal. The water damage tag on the battery is red, but the water damage tag on the phone is fine. This makes me want to invest in a new battery and try my luck returning it within the 30-day window, however I believe they keep track of which battery is with which phone, as every battery has its own serial number on it. I am really bummed about the phone, but if I am stuck on a 24 month long contract, I don't want to have to pay for a data plan my old phone can't even use. if you have any suggestions or ideas, I am all ears. Thank you!

Re: Water damaged Captivate 5 days after upgrade!
There is no contract for the data plan. Once you stop using a phone requiring a specific data plan, you can change to the data plan for the phone you are currently using. Switch to your old phone and call Customer Service to make the change. They may ask for the IMEI of the phone you are using so you should either write it down or call from another phone so that you can read off the IMEI to them. You can acquire a better phone from a different source when you can afford it or wait for your upgrade date.
There is likely internal damage to the phone even if the water indicator is alright. They will not take back a damaged phone.

For a replacement, look at AT&T's line of Go Phones. There is no (additional) charge if you pick the Pay-As-You-Go plan.
I've used Go Phones to replace damaged or lost phones, and I've been without a contract for 5 years.

Get a warranty for your captivate .It covers water damage drops and damage.
If interested email me your name and email address .I will send you the info.
If purchased same day as you by the phone it is covered from day one.
THE CONTRACT STATES IF PHONE IS PURCHASED PRIOR TO WARRANTY BUY DATE WARRANTY STARTS AFTER 30 DAYS, THEN IT IS COVERED FOR EVERYTHING.

Don't you mean insurance? When you sign up for insurance, the insurance carrier verifies the insured device is actually in use on the line. This is to prevent fraud from people insuring a device after the loss has already occurred. It is the same as insuring a car you have already wrecked.
