Hey I just joined the forums (pretty awesome !) and I have AT&T and a completely noob when it comes to smartphones. Anyways I have a iPod Touch 4th gen (planning to sell) and I wanted a smartphone that is Wi-Fi friendly and just as capable as the iPod Touch, I was planning to get the iPhone 4, but I don't have a micro-sim. So basically I'm looking for a smartphone with these qualifications...

    -AT&T, regular sim card
    -WI-FI friendly (able to text/Facebook/Skype/Google Maps/etc. )
-Works well without 3G or 4G plan
    -Android OS
-Decently good camera 3.0 megapixels or better
-Music/Movies/Video (I assuming all smarts are capable of this?)
-Easy to use touch screen (I have the Samsung Eternity and it uses pressure...its horrible)

I when on the AT&T website and looked at phones that matches these qualifications, the HTC Aria, Samsung Captive, Sony Ericsson Xperia, and other ones popped up. Also I'm new to the Android OS, but I heard its quite user friendly and their app market is expanding dramatically correct?

It would be much appreciated if you guys could help me! Thanks!

    Re: AT&T Smartphones!

Any smartphone you acquire from AT&T or which was once offered by AT&T will require a smartphone data plan. It does not matter how you obtain the phone. There is no guarantee that other unbranded smartphones will not be classified as such in the future. It might not be prudent to spend a lot of money for an unbranded phone just to save $15.00 per month on a data plan. You would have to spend less than $360 above the subsidized price of an AT&T phone to just break even. After spending all that unrecoverable money, you still could get the text message warning that you need a smartphone data plan.

Ahhhh ya I just found that out...I'm on a family plan for another 4-5ish months with AT&T and I was really hoping to get the HTC Inspire too DX! And JUST to make sure, even if I purchase a HTC Inspire from Craigslist and insert my sim card (without a data plan) it still WON'T work, correct? Also I don't know what "unlocking" is, but is that a method of solving this?
Thanks again for the detailed heads up!

Unlocking a phone simply allows you to use the SIM card from another carrier in that phone. It has no effect upon how the phone is treated by the carrier. In fact, the carrier has no way of telling whether a phone is unlocked or not.

I got an AT&T HTC Android and I love its capabilities especially the free apps.I love the uloops app.Anyway the only problem I got with the phone is it seems like it has a bug or something because the voice dialer keeps popping up out of nowhere calling people. It is really annoying.

Some models of the iPhone 3GS have that problem also. I switched my wife over to my old iPhone 3GS because of that. It either dials the last number called or hears a name in the background and matches it with someone from the address book which sounds similar to it. Another problem is that the dialer treats a non cancellation as acceptance of the proposed call. Often one does not even know that the dialer is trying to confirm a selection.
