AT&T wont Unlock my cell phone?

So the other day my mom went washing and accidently put the phone in the wash and she brought it back with the screen flickering and so I let it dry and it does not work, T-Mobile phone used in on Airfire phone carrier in WI. So i dicided that I would buy a phone from craigslist and then unlock it. The new phone is an AT&T Pantech Link and so I called the company and asked them for the unlock code and the phone can be unlocked as I have put the sim card from the bad phone in there and the phone says "SIM Locked" with other things like incorrect SIM but it has an unlock option and I pess it and it warns me that more than ten bad codes and phone will lock forever, But AT&T says that the phone can't be unlocked. SO I told them what the phone said and then out of the blue they say well there is an Unlock code for my IMEI and that it can't be unlocked Untill March 31, 2012. Are they just making this up or are they being truthfull? I am going to go to the company store from my carrier and going to ask them if the can unlock it. If they can or can't I will let you know but for now what do you guys think?

I'm pretty sure the date they gave you doesn't matter.
