I want to buy an unlocked Blackberry Curve and put my pay as you go Sim chip in it.
I understand I will then need a smart phone data plan.

I'm on the 10 cents a minute plan.

Will AT&T automatically deduct the cost of a data plan from the amount I have pre-paid?
Can I select which data plan they make me pay for?

I visited the AT&T store yesterday and was told a smart phone will not work on a pre-paid plan. I asked about unlocked phones and the rep said "We can not guarantee it will work".

Will they block my service or phone number once they find I am using an unlocked smart phone on a pay as you go plan?

    Thanks.

    Re: Unlocked Blackberry Service Question

Many phones available for purchase in the US are pre-programmed for the carrier that you get them through. While AT&T will support voice calls on unlocked devices using data will be problematic because the network will not recognize the phone you are using and the settings in the phone are not those for the carrier. Blackberry phones are also very specific types of phones which require a specific type of data plan with AT&T in order to connect to RIM servers and use functions such as BBM, email, etc. While AT&T will not block your service for using this phone do not expect the data or any of the other BlackBerry specific features to work on a prepaid service. Your phone will be able to make/rec voice calls, use text messaging (if you can program the AT&T message centre number into the phone) but no picture messaging or data.

Thanks. I was also told by a friend that Blackberry's were different from other cell phones. Something in the software or the signal.
I really don't want a data plan at all, I would like to be able to use WiFi occasionally.

You should have no problems using wifi on your phone, as long as it is personal wifi or a hotspot where wifi is unlocked or you have the key. You would not however be able to use the AT&T wifi hotspots (they are pretty much everywhere) without a post paid or contract based data plan however.

    Re: Unlocked Blackberry Service Question

After too many days of looking at phones I just picked one. I got an AT&T Fusion smart phone. It works on their pay as you go plan and the salesman told me I don't need the data plan. Everywhere else people are pushing the data plan.

I didn't necessarily want a smart phone but it cost less than a dumb one with a qwerty keypad.

I've had less trouble choosing a bike or truck.
There's too many options in cell phones these days. The deciding factor on this one was the price and battery life.
