    Hi,

I've been using ATT for several years for my cellphone. My wife and I share a plan. We only have voice and no texting or internet. But now we have decided to get smartphones and a data plan. We prefer to stay with ATT since we also use their internet service and cable tv. But we are open to other plans perhaps, if we can keep our present phone numbers. We would mostly use the smartphones for texting and checking emails.

I travel for my business some and would probably use the data plan more than my wife. We also have a Windows Surface tablet. So I have a few questions:

    1. Since I need the data plan more than my wife, does it make sense for me just to get a data plan on my phone or is it cheaper for us to share data?
    2. We use our router at home to connect the tablet to internet. Is there a way I can use a data plan for the phone to also connect the tablet to internet when I travel?
    3. Does ATT have good plans currently?
    4. What about other companies? Any really good plans available?

    Thanks,

    Bob

    1. If you're both getting smart phones then you both need have data anyway, so I would go with the sharing data option.
    2. A lot of phones have a mobile hotspot feature that you can connect other wi-fi devices to and use the phone as a router. So yes, you can do this, but it may cost extra.
    3. What do you mean by good? I'd say they're fairly priced when compared to competitors.
    4. T-Mobile has some good deals right now, mainly no contract stuff. However, their coverage may not be as good as AT&T in your area.

We live in the Florida Keys (Marathon) and the ATT coverage has been great. I heard people complaining about other providers though but not sure which ones are bad. So I would prefer to stay with ATT. I hear there is a price war going on and data plan monthly rates are dropping. I'll check with ATT and see what they got going on. Also, I am actually a software developer who does web development for a living. And yet I am clueless about about smartphones! But I hear Samsung has great phones. Can you recommend a Samsung model?

Yeah, data plan pricing seems to be going through a bit of a change since more carriers are getting faster data in more places and getting more competitive. Generally you won't need GB's of data a month. I have 5gb between two phones and I usually only use 2 or so. (wi-fi doesn't count towards the total)

I use a Galaxy SIII and I love the phone. Since the S5 is out, the S4 is now cheaper or even free with some plans. Keep in mind how large you want the screen to be. The s4 has a pretty big screen. There is also a S4 mini that has a smaller screen. I would take a look at them in person to get a good feel for them.
