Re: Text messaging stuff on new years morning?
Common prob at that time as network is temporarily overloaded, even with
Telstra.
The actual # sent around that time is huge. Big $
Keep trying.

you don't think asking him to keep trying will just make the network more
overloaded for all the other users?

I sent a couple of text messages last night then tried calling someone
immediately afterwards. Network congestion message was the response each
time it failed to dial.
Today, I found that none of the messages got through. It'd be
interesting to see what the percentage rate is for those that did and
didn't get through. Looks like money for jam for Telstra, etc...

Anybody have any specs on the hardware they use to route SMS's? Queue
size for example? If they had a decent machine with say 16GB of ram
(hell, almost like my workstation), they shouldn't have any problems...
I can't see why they'd have to lose a single SMS, at worst, there should
be a delay of a few days. Pathetic.

Vodafone was indeed "down" from 1155pm 31/12 until 0015 1/1 in Lilydale,
Vic.

Re: Text messaging stuff on new years morning?
each message ties up a rx/tx channel for a while.
most probably not "ram shortages" with too many 160character text messages
being handled

Money for jam? How? If they didnt transmit to the Telstra SMSC, you dont get
charged.

No Telephone company sets up a network to allow 100% of users to be
using a phone at any one time, that would be financially unrealistic.
Instead they calculate what is the average load in a given area and
allow for a certain excess load.
New Years Eve into the small hours of the New Year has always overloaded
EVERY mobile network in all the years of I have had a mobile phone, even
before SMS. It is a simple fact that every man and his dog that has a
mobile phone wants to use it at that time, so basically bad luck.
As Rodney Rude says, "It's happened, it's done, get over it!" :P

We'll see. I'll note the charges, if they're there, when I get my next
bill.

It's not hard to meet expenses, they are everywhere.
