Not sure why you want to transfer to CDMA when Telstra will be shutting
the network down..

And I suppose you actually think the shutdown will occur within 2 or 3
years? Not a hope.

Exactly. And he will probably want a new handset by then, and the deals will
be good too.
Even now cheap handsets are available under $100

- Because it's not shutting down tomorrow
- The coverage is far better than Telstra GSM
Lots of people were still signing up for Telstra analog in the late-90s
for those exact reasons, even thought the shut-down date was being
advertised for years in advance. I still keep one of each (GSM for
day-to-day and CDMA when I'm out of range) and will continue to until
the day the signal disappears.

What, like your average punter does every two to three years anyway as
they re-sign their contract? Phones break, phones become obsolete,
it's sometimes cheaper to resign a new contract than buy a new battery,
people want new toys... Not every man and his dog expects to be using
the same handset in five to ten years time.

Number yes, plan probably not.
Why? Have you actually checked coverage with other GSM carriers where
you want to go? The CDMA wider coverage is a myth in most cases,
anyway. It was very popular because it was a bridge from the old
Analogue AMPS system.
You'll get 3-4 years out of CDMA and then this will change to another
networks, 850mhz UMTS.

Wrong when he said telstra GSM to telstra CDMA.

No it isnt.

Its still very popular outside the major citys because the
coverage is much better, particularly between towns.

You dont know that the govt will allow that yet.

Wrong. Obviously never travelled off the highways.

According to Telstra, when it announced this 3G changeover, most mobile
phone owners change their phones every 18 months or so.
My concern is not so much for the technology and its cost for the
consumer, is the coverage. I'm with Telstra CDMA and I've found it a
reasonable service, given my travelling habits. I just hope that
whatever we get saddled with is as good.
Thing is, I don't reckon that CDMA and certainly GSM has ever regained
the coverage round the Gippsland (SE Vic) are where I travel most since
AMPS was shut down.

Rubbish. Its the best coverage of all the mobile networks in Australia
