    Whereabouts in regional Vic?

    Vodafone coverage is patchy.

eg Beechworth there is virtually no coverage IMHO recently.

Otherwise the vodafone capped plan sounds a goer.

A couple of people on .mobile use the Vodafone GPRS plan while they are
out of town, $49 for up to 1GB of GPRS data IIRC. If you then don't use
it you can throttle your spending down to a few dollars a month
apparantly (is that parking your number?). Might be worthwhile if you
object to being charged by time.

Thanks for the tip, but I understand the $49 "unlimited" plan (with up
to 500MB 'fair use') was pulled by Vodafone last year when it launched
3G, in favour of a $99 "unlimited" plan (with up to 1GB 'fair use').

Vodafone's $49 data bundle now only buys you 300MB, whether on GPRS or
    3G.

Thanks mate - it's actually Point Cook, which I just discovered isn't
really regional at all... <40km from Melb CBD.

Vodafone coverage there is (reportedly) ok. Can anyone verify this?

At GPRS speeds, how much do you seriously intend downloading? For basic
    email/NG/browsing, 300mb should be plentiful.

Fair point, Mark, but for the same value ($49), I'd rather have an
all-you-can-eat download quota that's time limited.

I might do <300MB over 3½ weeks, but I suspect it's not worth risking
excess data charges if I don't. When I used Telstra pre-paid mobile
for data while away last year, it really surprised me how quickly the
    data usage climbed.

The caps, are all timed DATA, not volume now. Certainly for the $79
and $149 caps. About 20 cents per minute, GPRS or 3G. I'd would
imagine you'd get a good shot the the city from Point Cook. You can
    see the high rises.
