On one of the tv current affairs shows last night they presented the
case of Telstra charging 42c for each unanswered mobile-to-mobile call.
A bedridden woman was using a single ring on the mobile to summon her
carer from another part of the house or yard.
The phone or plan was with Vodafone and Voda maintains that such calls
are not charged. But it is Telstra who do their actual billing, and
Telstra charges 42c for each of these calls. But as an act of good
faith, Telstra agreed to halve the phone bill for these calls this time.
Can anyone make sense of what's actually going on here?

I did see something similar myself when calling a cdma handset
which spent quite a bit of time turned off, when it was travelling
around northern aust out of range. I called it quite a bit trying
to catch them when they were in a town with a cdma service,
never did get them. Got billed for only some of the calls, none
of which ever get answered.
Telstra claimed it couldnt happen but did remove them all from the bill.

Some mobile phone companies will allow you to send an SMS with your
phone number, to notify someone that you've called. Telstra don't
charge the caller for this, but some others do.

Yeah, good point, didnt think of that at the time.
They did call me, so I got them eventually.

Re: Telstra charging for unanswered calls
The SMS item Graeme mentioned is called Callback Notification Service,
or CNS for short. a lot of people have it set up when messagebank is
disabled. CNS can be set up so it rings for 30 secs (default is 15
secs) before the caller gets the RVA. One of the annoying bugs in the
system, is that when people have messagebank. There used to be an RVA
like, "your call is about to be diverted", so a lot of callers go
straight through to messagebank and alas, charged for the call, even if
they hang up during the greeting which might be a few seconds.

I've since remembered why I didnt send an SMS, I wasnt at all
confident that they would actually know what to do when it arrived.

Telstra get to decide if a call from Voda to Telstra is answered or not.

Doesn't the B party Telco make money out of incoming calls?

Which blows that "and Telstra charges 42c for each of these calls" right out
of the water.
