I've been thinking about buying a Docomo FOMA P900iV 3G Phone, but I'm
not sure if it will work on any of the Australian 3G networks. I've
managed to figure out the Telstra uses the same kind of SIM card (USIM
or UIM) and that Telstra actually licenced their network technology
from Docomo... I've done a lot of research into this and I've found a
lot of information on Wikipedia/Other forums but the one thing I havn't
    found: A straight answer.

Does anyone know if this will work or not?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3G :
"FOMA, launched by Japan's NTT DoCoMo in 2001, is generally regarded as
the world's first commercial 3G service. However, while based on
W-CDMA, it is not generally compatible with UMTS (although there are
steps currently under way to remedy the situation)."

    Australian 3G is UMTS/W-CDMA.

While not a "straight" answer, I would put it in the category of
    "unlikely".

It should work if it were unlocked, but it will be operator locked.
Handsets are sold operator locked in Japan, and they don't give out
unlock codes. So it won't work.

Docomo's network is compatible with our 3G system, I have roamed on it
using a Three handset (Moto A1000) last year.

All our 3G networks use USIM cards.

Telstra licensed imode from Docomo, not relevant your question though.
