My daughter gave me her old phone; a Kyocera SE 47 complete with
    charger.
What do I have to do to get this phone working?
I just need it for emergencies on some sort of prepaid basis.

    Any advice gratefully received.

Sign up with a mobile telco.

Southern Cross Mobile is likely the best bet.

Your handset is a CDMA type, not a GSM. ie: rather than using a SIM card,
your phone is assigned an Electronic Serial Number (ESN).

If the handset was used on the Orange network previously, cannot be
    connected anymore (no longer supported).

However, if it was previously connected through Telstra, Optus or Southern
    Cross, then no dramas.

Suggest you get a CDMA (not GSM) starter kit on Telstra Prepaid Plus from
your local Telstra Shop. Refer http://www.telstraprepaidplus.com.au

My daughter tells me that the phone was linked to Orange.
So do I understand that it is now useless?

I believe so; however there may be an opportunity to get a subsidized
upgrade to a Three 3G handset. Give Orange (Three) a call and ask them.
