Ah they're running a con with this - I just had a look at that URL and there
is a little note saying it's free until September this year. No doubt they
will come up with some excuse to levy a fee for it.

In answer to your last 2 questions.

Yes, it is a backup (which really are only copies anyway) of your SIM data.

It's not really a con, it's the way Optus does things, they offer it free,
but have the right to charge for it after a certain time if people abuse it,
& you know upfront they may charge for it down the track, they don't
normally just spring the charges on you. If you look back all free services
or content offers from Optus have a time limit, but if the services haven't
been abused they extend the time period. SIM backups time has been extended
from March this year. I know that Optus have extended free Streaming TV 4
times so far, & many other services have been extended too.
And as I've said previously you don't have to use the service just because
you have a SIM backup card, all existing SIM cards up to about 18 months old
& all new SIM cards are SIM backup ready anyway. The SIM cards don't come
SIM backup activated, you have to activate the service yourself.

Cheers
Glenn P.
