After looking over the forums I decided to dodge the 6820, and bought
an N70 on a $40/month Telstra plan (switching from an Optus Yes plan
after finishing the contract).
I've had the phone for a couple of days and am loving the features
despite some odd quirks (most of which I'd already read about).
My only nagging issue is that every time I start the phone Bigpond
starts up in the background. I called Telstra and after being put on
hold for a while while the lady I was speaking to contacted technical
help staff I was told that:
1) Nokia N70 is supposed to connect to bigpond front page
automatically. No charge for this.
2) Charges start when you start browsing or downloading.
3) If finished browsing exit via option close bigpond otherwise page
may constantly refresh which is charged.
4) I am on 2 month free trial
Is this correct? Once you're done with the 2 month trial, do you get
charged the minute you hit the Bigpond page, or only when you actually
start to surf? How does this work?
I kept details (employee number, name and time of call, and read the
above back to her) just in case this comes back and bites me, but it's
the one thing I'm feeling truely nervous about which I guess is no
surprise given I'm new to both 3G and Telstra.
One other quick question. If I switch of Messagebank, are there any
charges associated with this?
Should I expect any nasty surprise charges? I can afford to go over my
$40/month but I really don't like the idea of paying for something I
don't use.
Thanks in advance.

Depends what you mean by charges.
If you "switch off messagebank" you can do one of two things
- the call will divert to the IVR in which people can leave their number and
it will be SMSed to you (this is called Callback Notification service)
- have nothing at all
If you just want option a), then just cancel your diverts
If you want option b), you need to call customer service on 125111

So does that mean I would get charged for the SMS for option a but not
for b?

On my telstra prepaid Motorola L6, if I miss a call (I don't have
messagebank turned on), I get a notification in my received calls list and
I get a SMS from telstra telling me who called me and that I missed a call.

There are 2 reasons I don't want to leave message bank on. The first is
cost but the second is that I already have an answering machine on my
home line. If someone really wants to leave a message, and I know them
well enough that they have my home number, they can leave it there. If
not all I want is the phone number. I'll call back in my own time
instead of fiddling with a voice menu a few times a day. I already
check work email, home email, and my home answering machine. I don't
need another thing to check only to learn someone's left an inane
message (eg. invitation to see a movie) that would only have been of
any use if I'd got it when the call was made.

Optus combine both. If they ring you but don't leave a message, you get
an SMS saying "<number> called, but didn't leave a message". Most handy
when you fly a lot and your phone actually gets turned off.
One feature I've missed since moving to Telstra.

I've been testing calling myself from a fixed phone with Messagebank
deactivated. What Telstra seem to do is put the power in control of the
caller rather than the receiver. The caller can choose to leave a
number (for standard call costs) or not (for free), and if the number
is private the caller is prompted to give permission to leave the
number anyway. When I was with Optus when the number was private you
got a missed call from private number (which is silly really). I don't
mind letting people who call me decide whether or not to leave the
number, and it's good that they pay for it, not because I'm so tight
but because it will force them to think whether or not they really need
me urgently when I'm unavailable. If they decide they didn't want to
call me after all, that's cool and that's their choice. For most people
25c isn't a deterent.

Not necessarily, some that call me do have private
numbers and if I was expecting a call from one of
them, I can ring them to check if it was them.

Sure, it would be better to be able to specify which type of behavour you want.

Re: Telstra 3G - Bigpond starts in the background
Hmm I've been reading up no Symbian OS and looking at my phone with
FExplorer. From what I understand the Symbian Auto Start API is used to
start applications on the phone, and the configuration for this ends up
in \system\recogs
I think I've tracked the file down to a binary file -
E:\system\RECOGS\sk2rec.mdl which has a nice Bigpond icon associated. I
suspect moving this file would fix my problem, but I don't know what
other side effects it will have, so I'm not going to try it. I don't
want to play the idiot that killed his mobile in less than 3 days. I
also don't know if technically this violates my agreement with Telstra
to mess with the software (though I'm sure it'd void warranty if it
caused a problem).
Since it's on my memory card though I will see what happens if I pull
the memory card and start the phone. I've ordered a one gig memory card
so when I copy that over perhaps I'll try copying it over without that
file.

Did you get your prepaid Mot L6 through the migration offer?

Nope. Fart-arse away with the software all you like, you own it
