There was a 1600, an extremely basic phone. Just what people want these
days, it made phone calls and little else.

I don't think so. Though, I do seem to recall the 1610 and 1630 being sold
    interchangeably, perhaps as a "1600".

LOL. Everyone remembers Freestyle. What on earth was "Pocket Price"?

Yep, we got one with Optus in 1996. It featured a full-size SIM card, and
it could not send SMS (only receive). This made it impractical after a
while, although I continued to use it until well into 2000. This is a
    picture of it:

The original $20 FP that brought mobiles to the masses.
Optus was a backwater in mobiles back then.

I'm sure it revolutionised the mobile market. I suppose it was the first to
include a subsidised handset with free calls, reduced rates etc.

    Telstra, further and further behind.

Yep, and you even encouraged someone to buy one back then

That Nokia 1600 was also marketed as the Nokia 'Easy' IIRC.

It didnt have free calls because it had a great off-peak rate to start with.

"reduced rates"? what kind of fluff is that? any plan with offpeak is
therefore "reduced rates", even if the peak rate is $1 per minute and the
    offpeak 99c per min.

You should work in marketing, fool

You may not THINK so, I am telling you that there WAS a 1600. It was brought
out for people who couldnt afford a 1610. After all, it was in the days
before the carriers subsidised their phones. (and before Vodacrap came to
    our shores)

Thats the one, I have one somewhere around here. I used to show it to the

Too bad about those dodgy antennas. Sold heaps of them at $30 a pop because
    they kept snapping off/breaking inside
