You are right, I roamed for 9 days and the total bill was only $160 - that
included two ten-minute calls back home.

Use it as little as possible - that keeps the cost down.

Check out whether there is a data bundle for your plan that will save you
    money

    Perfectly normal.

Your phone is based in Oz. So when you receive a call when OS, your network
is forwarding the call from Oz to O/S. So you generally pay for a call from
Oz to O/S at the normal IDD rate.

Then the O/S carrier charges airtime for incoming calls. So you pay that.

Gee, why didn't I think of that?

There isn't. I'm on the only plan available for this phone for a zero
dollar purchase. I get $5 of included data charges and that's about it.
None of the bonus options cover data that I can recall. In any case, I
chose one of the voice options (3 mins. free calls to selected Telstra
    mobile - my wife's).

    Ask a stupid question.

That is the easiest way to keep costs down.

Most people make absolutely unnecessary calls - you hear them all the time.
Discussing what they are going to do over a drink tonight. What they had for
dinner last night. The movie they watched last night.

    At least you get something
