I've heard stories that customers (with a bit of help from some
dealers) are trying to convince Telstra that they were misled into
thinking that their 3G phone, connected as far back as January in some
cases, would work on the new (NextG) network when it came online.
    anyone heard similar stories?

    Yeah!
    Lived one.
Telstra offered me a phone when I came back after cancelling all of my
Telstra services because of a problem with my Bigpond connection.
    Around Feb of this year.

"Great phone...gonna be magic when we go 3G"
I signed for a contract. Nothing upfront.

    Very nice Motorola V3x

When "NextGen" came in, I found the phone was incompatible.
Whined like a baby...I do that.

Telstra admitted fault and cancelled my contract without penalty.
    Opened a new one.
Sent me a cheapie ZTE that is compatible with NextGen.
I got to keep the Moto. Use it on my Optus GSM service.
Works better than Telstra in my part of the Bush.

Mentioned it, here, at the time. Got comments like "what made you
think 3G and Nextgen were the same.?"
Well, handbooks for both phones refer to them as "3G"
The ZTE (also bearing the "telstra" brand does not mention "Nextgen")
    Just "3G".

seems Telstra accepted that phone sales people didn't have a clue,
    either.

BTW, I have studied my Motorola hand book....not a single reference to
the frequencies it might work on. Just "3G"
The ZTE lists all of them. Still talks "3G"

Sure, I am a dumb old bastard....only started using cellphones around
    1994.
If this was a perfect world, we, probably, wouldn't
    be in it.

So you are too stupid to do your own research, then you blame a great
    australian company like Telstra?

    Grow up, you moron.

When the sales staff at Tel$tra shops proclaim to know it all, why should a
buyer need to do his/her own research?

Answer: because all the T-shop droids are SFB ignorant.

    >Grow up, you moron.

    Go away, telstra clown.

Some people do not understand the difference between 3G and "3G". They
have been labelled the same too often. Also don't forget, many people
don't really know what to look for when buying a phone, and therefor
rely on the sales staff to 'match' them to a phone. So if the sales
staff are bent as most seem to be atm, then the customer doesn't know
    better.

I've been spun so much **** from salesreps about NextG phones etc that
if I didn't know better, I'd swear black and white it was better than
satphone, eg I even had one clown tell me the signal because it uses
HSDPA technology will go THROUGH mountains unlike any other signal. I
basically told me I didn't know what I was talking about when I
cracked up and told him the physics of radio waves vs mountains.

As for Telstra being a good comany, FARKING BULL****! It's f%ck the
customer and go the profits as per any large company. They don't give
a rats arse if your phone line goes down, or in a lot of cases if you
were spun a BS story by their salesreps. Telstra is more dishonest
than a bunch of lawyers, have poorly trained staff in many cases and
overcharge. Just like all the other phone companies. As much as I hate
OPTUS, they seem to have better pricing and support than Telstra now,
especially if you are lucky enough to get their cable service.

    Research?
Talking to an accredited rep for a "great Australian company" (sorry
to be a stickler for the correct use of caps for proper names) isn't
    "research"?

Actually, I did some research. Seems that "Great Australian company"
was hiding stuff.....and, of course, telling lies. (Well, their paid
mouthpiece was) Who you gonna call?

Anyway....they admitted fault and fixed the situation at their cost.

    Situation sorted.........

What a load of ****ing frog ****, Telstra might be partly Australian
owned BUT they are sending most of their money off shore via the
    Three Amigo's!

Thanks for that completely superfluous proof that you have
never ever had a ****ing clue about even the most basic stuff.

In that case, read my experience further up the thread.
