If they're relying purely on a land-based mobile system to get them out
of said "life and death situation", they can't exactly be "serious
    4WDrivers", can they...

Good point, actually. The bare minimum comms for 4wd would be UHF and HF
radios, and for those with a fair dinkum bank account, a sat phone, (if
there is one at the time). A mobile phone is next to useless out back.

    Nope.

Makes a lot more sense to have that before UHF and
HF radios and a hell of a lot cheaper than those too.

4WDs aint just used in the outback, cretin.

UHF has no costs at all after purchase, and HF only cost is the licence
    unless you use radphone.

An EPIRB cant be used as a 2 way communication device.

That's right, but it'll get you help in a "life or death situation",
which the OP claimed he needed a terrestrial mobile phone for...

Pity about the cost and reliability of it.

Even a terminal ****wit such as yourself should be able to do better than that pathetic effort.

Irrelevant to whether it makes a lot more sense than farting about with HF.

Windmills or jack hammers or %#@#@@ can also be used as a 2 way
    communication device.

My God! Roddles is wrong! Now here's a first.

May I be so bold as to suggest Rod takes a look at RFC 3676?

Duh, pity you know very little about how they use UHF and repeaters in the
    outback.

Yes, it is very expensive. Reliability seems to be acceptable for the RFD.

Doesnt work where you need HF, you pathetic excuse for a bull**** artist.

A globalstar phone and an EPIRB leave both for dead cost wise for life and death situations, fool.

Wrong again, anyone with a clue uses a globalstar phone and an EPIRB for real life and death
    situations.

And the bulk of the RFD installations arent in 4WDs anyway, you pathetic excuse for a bull****
    artist.
