That doesnt worry me with an operation of that size.

I do have skype already, use it PC to PC tho.

Not quite as convenient to use as the N95 and that isnt likely to be
explicitly suppored as it is with MNF which is a significant consideration.

And I got hundreds of bucks in dingoblue credits that the fools were
actually stupid enough to pay out in cash when they folded too.

Guess I might as well invest $20 of that in MNF even if that does take a decade to spend.

OK, no rush, plenty of time to see how they go. I've signed up for the
MNF whirlfool offer and get 15c/min calls to mobiles with that, so the
only real advantage with Pennytel is the 8c untimed calls to the US etc.

are a part of a much bigger organisation.

    Problem, what problems.

The only main prob I am aware of was over the Christmas period
They ran out of stock of ATA's that they were selling on special offer.
I have been using the service since before Christmas last year with
little problem, occasionally you dont get through, but try again and you
will, this appears to be common with other voip providers, I also have
it setup with internode VOIP as well, although since connecting with
pennytel, I've not used it, I havent bothered to cancel it as its
costing me no monthly fee. The Pennytel gave me ,for no extra cost, a
DID number, for which I selected a Brisbane number as many of my kids
and grandkids are living there, and there was no local Cairns number for
me, although I could have a Singapore number if I wanted.

Just had another look and it's probably not true to say that they
    *currently* have problems.
During December they had a run of problems though. Recently they haven't
been quite as bad, though a 2 hour outage in February isn't a good sign.
    Here's their outage log : http://www.ozvoipstatus.com/?page=raw&p=5

Dunno, I get all the iinet fault emails and their voip has been down a lot more than that.

And since I dont plan to use incoming much if at all, it wouldnt normally worry me much.

Ta. What was the call quality like?

Also, are you easily able to receive incoming calls on your MNF number?
(i.e., if someone calls your MNF DID, will your N95 ring)?

    Perfect.

When someone rang me to verify the credit card details etc, before the started
the voip service, that wasnt perfect, but the calls I have made using voip have been.

    This poses another question.

When a call to your DID is made, whether from another VOIP service or via
PSTN how does the VOIP provider know how to direct the call to your ATA?

Does the ATA actually make a network connection and log into the VOIP's
servers and to establish an 'always on' connection?

If this is the case and you need to do the same with your N95 or whatever
mobile that has a VOIP thingy in it, wouldn't that mean that your data
allowance is eaten into by this connection, let alone any calls that you
    may make or receive?

The VoIP client registers it's IP address with the SIP server.

    Nope.

I forgot to ask which carrier's network you were using for the VOIP calls
    with MNF.

I was going to assume it was Telstra's NextG network, but I suppose I
shouldn't just assume that. Obviously 2G would be useless for VOIP, but
I'm not sure if Voda or Optus have 3G-ified their networks where you are.

I'm using wifi to my adsl.

    Correct.

    > Obviously 2G would be useless for VOIP, but I'm not sure if

Not yet with Optarse, due on a couple of months or
so, but I wont be using that, the wifi to my adsl is free.

Did some more tests yesterday, with someone else using the N95,
so I could hear what its like for the called party, non voip, landline.
Its not quite as good from that end when both are talking at once,
you can get a bit of a glitch, and thats with the N95 in loudspeaker
mode. I use handsfree with all phone I can do that on, including the
panasonic dect cordless phone I normally use.

I've started to use the voip for local calls too, mainly because
the 10c is much cheaper than on my landline service.

He supposedly lives in the MIA region, so it'd be safe to assume NextG,
unless Optus or other carriers have their 3G networks up and running out
    that way.
