Add to that : iPhone handsets are locked to the Optus network. An $80 fee
applies if network locking is removed within the first 6 months from the
activation date. Alternatively, if you recharge to the value of $80, no fee
applies.

I don't remember any clowns quoting $199 as the outright price. I do
remember people wondering how much the non subsidised price would be. IIRC
it was suggested that it would be in the region of $800-$900, maybe up to a
$1000.

Here, kind of. I expressed doubt that it would be much more than $399
(the price of 3's most expensive prepaid handset). $729 for a network
locked prepaid handset is ridiculous.
And I still reckon the iPhone will be shortly be available outright for
amounts considerably less than what Optus is proposing.
Within a few months (once the original high demand has dried up) we'll
start to get imports sourced from non-gouging countries.
