    I have an LG KU990 ...on Simplus/Optus.
AFAIK, Optus doesn't do 3G here in NNSW.
Usually, the signal meter shows the little umbrella thingy and bars.
Sometimes, though, instead of the umbrella thingy, it shows a "G".
    Occasionally, it shows an "H".
The handbook refers to a "3G" but not a plain "G".
It, also, says "H" means it HSDPA is available.
The odd icons seem to be at night....or, at least, that's when I
    notice them.
3 AM, now and it is showing the "G".

My question is ...why does it vary?

Thats likely only a temporary lack if it doesnt do that already. Mine has just started showing 3G.

That isnt supposed to show up outside the main population centers.

Thats plausible, you normally get inversion layers when a front is coming thru.

    > My question is ...why does it vary?

Because you can see other bases further away in the right conditions.

I meant that the 900 MHz coverage should be universal sometime.

    I did suspect that.
    Thanks.

they may actually be improving coverage and putting new wbts in the area
and during implementation and prior to acceptance into the live
network they may have the wbts on for testing? ususally some of this
activity occuring during a change window ie 11pm to 6am

    Thanks.
But it seems random Have seen the "G" icon in the middle of the
    day.....but that might fit, too.

But I remembered, later, that my old Motorola used to do it, too.
It used to show a "2.5G" icon for an hour or so after connecting.
Going back a year or so.

I wonder if it is a Simplus/Optus thing.
Was told by a Simplus sales person that Simplus does not do 3G,
Maybe Optus does have a local 3G service that I am getting dumped off
when the system sees who my provider is?
No idea....but it isn't a problem. Just curious.
Don't want the bells and whistles. Recently cancelled my Telstra
NextGen phone service because I don't need/want that stuff.

    Thanks.

I did check the Optus map, this morning.
Looks like they have full 3G coverage, here....so, I deduce, it is not
a matter of distance. The nearest tower is about 1.5 Klms away and on
a mountain overlooking my location. It services a section of the
Pacific Highway. Betting it carries 3G.
Unless I am missing something, it has something to do with the fact
that I am on Simplus who, they tell me, don't offer the Optus 3G
service. Even though they are owned by Optus.
I think I am getting the 3G connection, by glitch.

if its random more than likely inversion then.
