I'm looking to get an unlocked motorola phone for my bell contract.
I'm totally new to this whole cell phone world, I kind of understand the CDMA vs SIM card thing, and I know Bell is only CDMA.

Now I happen to like the Motorola phones a lot, but I don't particularily like the e815. What other phones are there available? the A840, but anything aside from that?

Also, will Bell willingly allow me to use an unlocked phone or do I have to use go through people I know within the company? I don't really care about the actual cost of switching the number and stuff, but I was hoping someone could tell me what's involved.

    Thanks a lot!

    Jess

Bell will probably not allow you to use any other phones unless they are sold by Bell themselves. The e815 isn't a bad phone, but if you can stride away from motorola, the new Samsung a920 is the most "high end" phone on Bell now and they have a promo on it for $99 w/new activation going on now

Interesting questions. First off, yes, you need a CDMA phone. Without getting into a lot of technical crap, GSM and CDMA are two different radio frequency bands. The way we explain it to customers (and believe me, some of them still don't get it) is AM and FM on your radio. If Bell is on FM only, and Fido (GSM) is on AM only, then you get the idea.

The Motorola V3C (Razr) phone will be available for Bell this coming month. However, I do strongly not recommend Motorola. Altho they do make some good phones, on average, their phones are sub-par quality when compared to Samsung or LG or Sanyo. Reception in particular is sub-par in most Motorola phones.

Living up here in Whitehorse, in the Yukon Territories, we have severe elevation changes within the city. We're a city of 23, 000 people, the capital city of the territory. Driving from downtown to one of the newer, more populated neighbourhoods, which takes about 10 minutes to drive, the elevation goes up 275 meters. Also we are surrounded by high elevation mountains and foothills. This creates a very difficult landscape for which to built a cellular network. We have 3 towers here in town, and 1 tower on the outskirts of the city. Even with those many towers (remember, you can drive from one end of the city to the other in about 15 minutes), we experience dead spots here and there.

When testing new phones here at the store, we take them out and test them around the city. Samsung has nearly always made a good phone. Good voice quality, good signal, good overall phone. LG usually also makes a good phone. 2 of their models have turned out to be lemons up here, but overall still a good phone manufacturer. Sanyo makes an excellent phone as well, barely any have come back for repair. Motorola seems to be the worst performing phone. There are many times where we will have 2 phones, Samsung and Motorola, side by side, and the Samsung will get digital signal and Motorola won't have any signal at all.

Anyways, bottom line, look at some other brands, you never know what you might like.

    Thanks for your reply
I decided to get the Samsung a920. I love it, great reception, and easy to use. My only complaint is not being able to transfer ringtones from them memory card to the phone... and you have to hold it in place a long time to take a picture, but otherwise, I'm completely happy with my choice.

No problem, it's what I do

And the A920 is one cool phone. We only got a few here at the store, but it's very impressive so far. Excellent TFT display, dual color internal and external, 1.3MP camera / camcorder, MP3 player, stereo speakerphone, EV-DO compatible, and even comes with a TransFlash card.

Everything you could ever want in a phone, from an excellent manufacturer

    Thank you Brad.

SellPhoneGuy: According to your profile, you are here locally in Whitehorse. Which store do you work for?

And to respond to your comment, yes, dual color LCDs, it's color on the outside, and color on the inside. Single color would be internal only being color, and external being monochrome.

My apologies if anyone else misinterpreted.

Sorry, Bell Store ? There is no Bell World corporate store in Whitehorse. All stores in Whitehorse are 3rd party indirect dealers. The closest Bell World corporate store is in Price George as far as I know.
