    Okay

I need some help in clarifying Bell’s Data Support. I have been done this road before and to be honest, when I contact Bell’s Support it can be a bit frustrating as I have to tell them what they offer (ie Apollo Mail).

Here’s what I need; a device that can provide me with a Cell Phone and also be able to receive and send emails. I’ve looked at the Blackberry and I’ve also looked at Cell Phones with DUN (Bluetooth Dial-up Networking ie Samsung a920) and the Voyageur System. The reason for the ie Samsung a920, is I have a PDA (HP IPAQ hx2750), which has both Wifi and Bluetooth and is currently sync’ed with my system at home (ie emails). The idea is to utilize Bell’s Data Support via a Cell Phone and my PDA as the final data device to access and sent emails.

However as mentioned I have also looked at a Blackberry, but do I need to go that far or can Bell provided what I need. The Voyageur notes PDA, however they really never tell you how; as they seem only interested in laptops.

So my final question. Can I utilize a Cell Phone and some part of Bell’s network to enable me to sent and receive emails via my PDA. Or do I bight the bullet and get a Blackberry.

As far as I know, what you're trying to do internet-->phone-->PDA isn't going to work. You would need a PDA that is also a phone.

Thanks, I had a feeling that I was going to have to go with the Blackberry anyway.

So here’s round two of my question. The 7130e seems to fit my needs quite well; however what’s your thoughts on this unit or any of the other Blackberry’s that Bell offers.

The last question is in regards to the amount of data I will need; the packages range from 1MB to 250MB. However, here’s my question as the emails I receive usually have attachments and some of them can be quite large (ie 1 to 3 Megs). However, if I do not download the attachment to my Blackberry, but simply read the email and if needed rely (Not forwarding) would I be charged for the attachment(s) in regards to MB being used.

By the way, thanks for the quick response. I’ve been googling the net for info on this and this forum and your moderating of it seems to be the best in regards to getting information and answers to questions. In fact, most of my previous questions got answered without having to post as I found what I was looking for. Thanks….mde

Hmmmmm, good question on the e-mail attachments. If the e-mail reaches your device, and you can open the attachment without having to further download it, then you would be billed for it. Personally, I have extremely litte experience with e-mails on Blackberry devices (we JUST got 1X service turned on last week). My assumption however, is that e-mails including their attachments are pushed through to the device, there is no seperate "do you want to also download attachment" option.

Also remember that tethering and BB stand-alone usage are different, and would be counted seperately.

As for the hardware itself, I have to go ahead and suggest the new 8703e. We just got them in here at the office so we can test 1X and the BB e-mail options, and it's a pretty nice unit. It has the full QWERTY keyboard. I know the 7130e has the SURETYPE keypad, which works nearly flawlessly, but I still prefer a full QWERTY personally. The display is rich and nice, and the unit is slightly slimmer more compact than it's older 7250 brother.

Personally I don't even really like Blackberry devices, I prefer Windows Mobile ones like the UT Starcom 6700. But if it's Blackberry you're going for, definately go for the 8703e.

Thanks again... See the issue is I already have a PDA (IPAQ) which has MS Mobile and it seems a bit excessive to get an additional device with the same features. I'm really only interested in emails, that’s why I was originally looking for a Cell Phone to PDA connection. Any other ideas, as I know that the Blackberry might be a bit excessive, but I'm at a loss.

Really all I need is an email / cell phone device. This way I can make calls and also read and rely to some emails. I have Apollo currently, but its very limiting and typing on a Cell Phone can drive some one to drink. I've tried replying to emails and eventually had to find an Internet Cafe as it was taking for ever and I had only just started.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Well, one question, do you have a notebook computer ? As in, do you pack one around ?

Re: Emails - Via PDA or Blackberry Need Help

Yeh, I have a laptop, however I was looking for a handheld device. Something I can carry around in my pocket, and don't need to setup.

However, based on the info you've provided and also the net I've basically decided that the Blackberry is the way to go (at this time). I just need to confirm the attachment issue in regards to MB usage. I talked to an associate that has one and he showed me that you are asked if you want the attachment and if you would like to download it. So the only thing I need to determine; does the attachment count if you don't download it; and second is the 8703c worth the extra 300 dollars in comparison to the 7130e. As Bell currently is selling the 7130 for 149. Thanks mde

If it asked if you want it and if you want to download it, then no, it shouldn't count. Double check with Customer Care or with Data123 and they'll tell you for sure.

Personally, I like the 8703e with the QWERTY keyboard. I don't like the 7130e.

Re: Emails - Via PDA or Blackberry Need Help

    Hey Abom

Thanks for all your help so far, however I have a couple more questions or at least need some clarification on one thing…

So I finally decided that the 7130e Blackberry is the one… the current promotional price of 149 and its features work for me. So I went to the local Bell World Store and tried to buy the 7130e. Guess what, their out of stockhttp://cellphoneforums.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
but do have the new 8703e in stock. I inform the sales person that I was looking for the 7130e, so to his credit, he called a few other Bell World Store in the area (GTA), and surprise, they too were also out of stock but again had the 8703e in stock.

Okay, maybe I’m becoming cynical in my old age or the world of information is making me question everythinghttp://cellphoneforums.net/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
. But why would Bell have a promotion for a unit that they have no stock on hand for, unless they might be hoping that you will be willing to pay the extra 300 dollars for the new unit.

Alright maybe I’m out in left field here, but that’s a separate issue. Can you let me know if I should keep looking for the 7130e as it might, that the stores in my area are currently out of stock or is there in fact a back-order for this unit with RIM, or is my cynical suspicion in fact true? Or do I wait because Bell has plans to drop the price of the 8703e to say 249 within the next couple of weeks in preparation for the holidays.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: Emails - Via PDA or Blackberry Need Help

Ummmm, since we don't carry the 7130e, I don't really know if it's backordered. My assumption is that it is possible, based on the current promo they have for it (imagine every store in Canada were to order 5 units for the promotion, Bell Distribution would be out of stock in 15min). I don't think your suspicion is totally true in the fact that they withhold stock hoping you'll buy the more expensive one, I just think that too many people are wanting the 7130e and Bell is having trouble keeping up with the stock.

Both units are nice, it's really personal preference on which one you would like to use. Again, I like the full keyboard, so 8703e for me.

The stores should get in stock when Bell is able to get it to them, so you could wait and see if you wanted.

Sorry for the delay, but I finally got my 7130e early this afternoon, and right know all I can say is wow . I really appreciate your help over the past few weeks. I most likely be back with more questions (new thread) to you and the rest of the Bell Mobility Forum as I move forward and try and figure out how this unit works.

It's be a long road but I finally have a unit that I believe will give me the email capability I need.

Once again thanks and I hope winter won't be that bad for you up there in the North.

    Thanks

Re: Emails - Via PDA or Blackberry Need Help

No worries, glad you got the unit that suits your needs the best, that's the most important thing. I find that if a customer picks the right plan with the right hardware, they will be a good long term customer. It's the ones who don't understand what they're doing, for example the parents who buy their teenager the cheapest plan that gives them 60 daytime minutes

And as for the winter, I stepped off an airplane last week in Dawson City (about 500km north of me) to do pre-launch setup for our dealer, and it was -26 degrees. I think this year is going to be a cold one
