Do I HAVE to get them to unlock a phone? I don't want to pay that much and it's cheaper elsewhere. But if the phone is hard locked or blocked I can't do it. Do they block their phones?

You will only be able to use a Bell phone on another network if it also has a GSM antenna. Bell uses CDMA technology and technically can't be 'unlocked' in the traditional sense. But if the phone has the GSM antenna you can use it on another GSM network.

I contacted Bell and they no longer offer CDMA phones. The phone I want is GSM. LTE. It should work. Why would they offer an unlock service if you can't unlock their phones. Their technology shouldn't matter unless you are trying to use another phone on THEIR network. But taking one of their phones and using it on another network should be different right. They have LTE and HSPA+ technology as well. CDMA is quite old.

Apologies - they used to be CDMA, and that's how things used to work.

So yes, you are correct. You just need to make sure that the LTE antenna on the phone can get the LTE channel that Bell uses. Currently all carriers use different channels, and some phones only have antennas that can use certain channels.

Go to Settings > Security and Privacy > SIM Card: If the Network, Netwoork Subset and Service Provider all read Unlocked - then your phone is not locked to Bell. If they are locked then you will need to pay an unlock fee either to Bell or another unlocking service.
