I was looking to purchase a blackberry curve and I wanted to purchase it from T-mobile, since they do not require you to purchase a data plan. I noticed that the blackberry curve titanium included "wi-fi and mobile calling." so i was wondering if the wifi (assuming im at home and using internet from my router or just anywhere with wifi), was free?
and is this the wifi that allows me to go on the internet on the phone, or would that require the data plan?

Re: Wifi from Blackberry Curve Free?
Hi,
I got the curve 8320 with wifi (from ebay) I did not want the data plan either and did not want to pay a ridiculous high price for the phone outright from my provider.
I could never get an answer to this question as much as I tried before I bought it so I just went ahead and bought it anyway.
So, now I can tell you:
YES, you can use wifi on the blackberry curve 8320 WITHOUT a data plan!
ANYWHERE there is a wifi connection that is open or that you have access to.
You won't be able to go on the internet say, in your car, or anywhere that doesn't have wifi, but you can still use the phone and other applications.
The "wi-fi and mobile calling" you are referring to is a service that T-Mobile provides where they allow you to make phone calls for free over a wifi connection as well as the regular calling. You will not be able to do this without this extra monthly charge (may also require the data plan). I do not have T-Mobile so I can't be more specific on this.
I know you posted this a while ago now, so maybe you already found out on your own, but there you go.

Re: Wifi from Blackberry Curve Free?
I believe you are talking about the Hotspot@Home service for an extra $9.99/mo. It doesn't require a data plan, but you obviously have to have a voice plan already. It allows you to make unlimited wifi calls from any open, home and Tmobile Hotspot connection (Starbucks, Borders, etc...). Just the free calls at those Tmo Hotspot places-no internet.

Re: Wifi from Blackberry Curve Free?
No you do not need the Hot spot at home to use the "Wifi" on the blackberry curve. It does not cost extra on your bill either. I recently had the blackberry curve and would always hook up at my house to my wireless router and at work and it never charged me extra and I didn't have the hotspot at home package either. Also, I was informed that you do NOT need to get the blackberry data plan to use the internet, if you hook up through the wifi you can access the internet and not have to pay for the data plan.

Re: Wifi from Blackberry Curve Free?
In order to make unlimited wifi calls you do need Hotspot@Home service, unless Tmo has recently changed something and I don't know about it. I was talking about making UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Acces) calls.
Now using any open wifi is free, home and anywhere else. No data plan is needed, nor wifi plan.

O Ok yep, I don't know about the unlimited calls but I was just talking about the internet access. I never bought the Hotspot@ Home plan.

Re: Wifi from Blackberry Curve Free?
So the "built-in" Blackberry browser works on WiFi without a data plan?

Re: Wifi from Blackberry Curve Free?
Hi, if you have a router at home and have the Curve 8320, just go to "manage connections" you'll see 3 radio buttons, mobile nework, wi-fi adn bluetooth. Select wi-fi then the wireless phone will locate your router.. to my knowledge there is no extra charge from your provider as long as you use the wi-fi connection ... hope this helps

Re: Wifi from Blackberry Curve Free?
Make sure it's the model curve that comes with the WIFI as Verizon doesn't offer that one

Re: Wifi from Blackberry Curve Free?
I don't have data service with AT&T for my BlackBerry, but they do charge for data use per kilobit (what a surprise...) How do I connect to the web via Wifi, with certainty that AT&T isn't charging me? Is there a setting on my BlackBerry that allows wifi ONLY for the web?
Thank you.
