help! battery or the phone?

I just got a Blackberry Curve 8330[used].

when I recieved it the battery was wrapped seperately from the phone.
I inserted the battery and plugged it in.
the red light on the top came on for a few seconds and then was replaced with a white screen with a picture of a battery crossed out?

help, please.
