Ok so you now should have Audacity and LameDropXPD downloaded.
So first open Audacity. Go to file then click open and select the track you want to edit into a ring tone. Play the track until you get to the part that you want. Press stop. highlight the part to be deleted by holding down the left mouse button. Go to edit then delete. Play the track once more to make sure that you go it right before you delete the other end of the audio you want as you can still perform the undo delete. Next click where you want the audio to stop and delete the back portion of the audio. Then if you want highlight roughly the last 2 seconds go to effect and use the fade out feature. Then you go to file and export your finished audio as a .wav file. Then you open LamedropXPD right click to set your encoding options then drag the wav file into the Lame box that opened up and it will convert to mp3 automatically. Now it's ready to be put on you phone or memory card.
Now if you want say audio from a video source as your tone(say a line from your favorite Simpsons episode.) All you do is play the episode until the line you want is about to come up and pause playback. Open Audacity press the record button then start your video again (or song playing in a myspace player or youtube video or whatever) then stop the recording when you have what you need. Chop it how you want it inside of Audacity. Now if it's a short line such as "incompetent boobery" you can highlight the whole thing open edit select copy left click where you want it to repeat then click edit again and click paste. Then you can keep pasting without having to copy each time. When pasting you have to wait for the cursor to be a line not a finger for it to position for you.
