rooted and data modem

I have an evo 4g on boost but it is not rooted, and therefore can't install a data modem package like 'wireless tether'

a boost tech supp guy sez they don't have the wireless modem capability but a friend of mine gets it with his evo.
so boost tech supp is evidently going to be no help with this. I have heard none of the carriers want you to be rooted.
so any recommendations for rooting directions that have worked for them? and any pitfalls to watch out for?
