vw a2 golf or gti.... easy to work on, cheap to find, parts like mad, and what other 10+ year old car do you know of in its price range that looks as beautiful as it does... other then a corrado... which are also a nice car to tune if you have the money

the tuner's dream is the audi s4. civics were made popular by fast and furious. and the new civics arent very mod friendly.
btw, before the rsx came out, civics and integras were almost the same. diff body, but same engine dependin on which model u got.

i agree the civic probably has the most aftermarket support out there, but there are plenty of cars to tune.

for a cheap import car, the civic has a ton of aftermarket parts. if youre lookin to tune an american muscle car, there is plenty of aftermarket support for camaros and mustangs.

let's get real... how much does it cost for a civic to go fast?
way too much to end up with front wheel drive, weak grip, poor balance, and can barely fit anything wider than a 205 width tire.
Slapping on a turbo is short-lived fun (not to mention at least 5k if done semi-properly), as the lack of deck reinforcement warps the cylinders shortly thereafter. so, build the engine? lots of dough and still no traction to back it up. all motor? you must be kidding if you think 150 lbs (that would be on a well mod'd integra engine swapped in-at least 4k) of torque can pull much more than are red ryder wagon past a large number of current production vehicles. hands down, mitsu eclipse awd will blow the doors off a civic and still have money to buy tires to race with as opposed to rocking stock steel wheels and s-rated tires as "drag tires" on the front. an early (90-94) awd will go for as little as a few thousand, if in decent running condition 3k in upgrades can easily net a low 14 high 13 sec. timeslip. and being able to jump any car off the line is a nice feature too. not to mention actually being able to get past 150mph with reasonable stability if so desired. bear in mind a civic was NEVER designed to go fast, at all. eclipse has an iron engine block (iron block=can handle much boost) that can withstand significant abuse and aftermarket parts are plentiful. even just slapping on an intake gives a noticeable boost in power, unlike the merely added noise that would accompany the same mod on a civic. here's a little known secret in regards to a cousin of the eclipse: the 89-92 dodge colt/eagle summit/mitsu mirage has the same motor mounts and with minor mods can receive an eclipse turbo engine transplant. not even vaguely as many options (add-on crap, ugly bodykits, etc.) as a civic, but tons more power and hell of a lot cheaper. 2400lbs (hatchback preferred)and 200+hp by swapping in a stock eclipse motor? the only time you'll see civics is in your rearview mirror. gsr swap? hah! turbo baby, yeah!!! sorry about the rant, i'm a car guy who just happened to be looking for some cell phone info and tripped over one of my favorite subjects... point being: civics are great for gas mileage or if you like being part of the crowd that spends way too much to go fast. if you are looking for performance, buy a performance car or one that is able to greatly increase it's performance without going broke and having to replace damn near everything to get speed. oh yeah, mustangs aren't too bad, but my neck is not too red either.

its got a heavy block and unfortuntley u gotta strip a whole lot to make it light. BEST CAR TO FIX UP - GTi......just get the R32 fix up and stage 3 mod. 630 hp and 0-60 in 3.2 sec. The only thing is that the stage 3 costs 60 somewhat grand.
