Sony Ericsson W610i: Slim Walkman on the Edge

My friend bought this sleek walkman mobile yesterday. I made some time to write this review. I loved reviewing this amazing phone. Now have a look at this at your own and all the comments & discussions go here.

W610i is one another phone from the walkman series manufactured by Sony Ericsson that comes in two extremely stylish, plush orange and satin black colors. This slim and stylish gadget is 102mm in length and 46mm wide and 14mm in thickness. That’s what we call a slim gem. When it comes to the display, the 1.96 inch 256k TFT is simply bright and clear that I always loved. The screen resolution is 176 x 220 pixels. This handset weighs just 95gms which is just 4gms less than its predecessor w810i. The phone has a comfortable keypad with a dedicated Walkman™ key.

The phone comes with a 512mb Memory Stick PRO Duo™ M2™ that’s already loaded in the phone. So the user can start filling the phone with music as soon as the user opens the box. The external card memory can be upgradeable upto 2GB. Also the phone comes with 64MB of shared internal memory which some of its part is used up by the applications and configuration that’s already installed in the phone.

The user can store upto 1000 contacts in the phone memory which will surely be sufficient even to the business class people. Each contact has 20 fields for all the miscellaneous things to store like addresses, important events like birthday & anniversary, photo identity, notes, email, website etc. The photo call feature uses the photo attached to a contact and displays the attached photo on the screen when the particular person calls. The phone has a good vibration. The voice clarity in a call is very good. Even the loud speaker, i.e. handsfree speaker that has a stereo type sound is good. But the sound seem to be less audible in a noisy environment. The phone also comes with flightmode feature which can be activated in aeroplane so that the radio signals can be deactivated which might cause disturbances to the sensitive equipment in the aeroplane. The user can still use some features like Walkman™ music player while in aeroplane mode but can’t make or receive any calls.

As W610i comes with a Walkman™ logo, the built in Walkman™ Music player is just a great pleasure to use. The sound reproduced by this superb music device is just great. The user can switch to music player with a touch of the dedicated Walkman™ key that’s located just above the number keys in the center. The user can manage their music easily with the music options which include play, rewind, fast forward, shuffle, equalizer and playlists options. All Walkman™ phones come with MegaBass™ equalizer that turns the earphones into theater like sound system. The user can experience the enhanced bass clarity in different styles of music with this equalizer configuration. The Walkman® player supports all popular music formats which include MP3 & AAC formats. The TrackID™ feature helps users to identify the tracks and get information of the track like finding the name of the song and its performers quick and easy. How this works is, TrackID™ will record a few seconds of the song and send it to Gracenote™ database & in a few seconds we will receive the track information. Nice feature, isn’t it? This phone supports ringtones in WAV and MP3 formats. W610i comes with an interesting application known as MusicDJ™ with which the user can make amazing ringtones easily with the given preset instruments. Or simply the user can listen and download latest ringtones in 3 clicks by using PlayNow™ feature. Just browse through the ringtones in PlayNow™ menu and then select the ringtone the user wanted to purchase. The user will then get the confirmation sms with the cost of purchase and the money is deducted from the user’s mobile phone bill after download of ringtone, simple. W610i comes with FM Radio with RDS (Radio Data Support) which helps in sending text information directly to the mobile phone from the radio station. The stereo headset that’s included in the package needs to be connected to the quickshare port of the phone for the FM radio in order to work.

W610i is based on java platform. The other general handy user programs include alarm clock, calendar, calculator, task list, notes, business card exchange, stopwatch & timer. So the user can even download and play java games on the phone which are really fun to play.

W610i is not only just a mobile music device but also a good photo shooter. The phone comes with a 2megapixel camera with autofocus and a LED flash that all other mid segment Sony Ericsson phones have. The photos taken with W610i are just bright and brilliant with vibrant colors. Also the user can take good quality videos with amazing colors at CIF resolution. So the user can capture all that special moving action with this great phone itself. The recorded videos can be edited and added with some special effects using VideoDJ™ application that comes with the phone. The pictures and edited videos can be shared with friends using MMS technology if the user enables GPRS in the phone. The phone also supports photo blogging. This means the user can directly upload the captured photos with some description and title, to the picture blogging site which can be viewed by family and friends. The phone supports many easy to use messaging services which include MMS picture & video messaging, SMS text messaging & email. The user can enjoy a instant email service on their mobile phone as the W610i supports push email which works like an email service on the users PC or laptop.

This handset works on Quad Band GSM technology. (GSM 850 / GSM 900 / GSM 1800 / GSM 1900). There is a built-in RSS news reader that comes with the phone. The user can read latest news using GPRS and the RSS news reader. The phone offers class 10 GPRS connection that can send and receive data at a speed of upto 48kbps. For faster data transfer, W610i also has EDGE technology that can make the data transfers nearly three times faster than GPRS. The user can also enjoy the advantage of Bluetooth™ 2.0 wireless technology with which you can connect to other Bluetooth devices at a range of 10Metres from the device. The phone has Bluetooth™ with A2DP with which the user can stream high-quality stereo music from your phone to your wireless headset or other Bluetooth™ devices. For fast data transfer, you can use the USB 2.0™ for connecting to your PC and transfer videos, music and photos. You can use the USB cable provided in the package to use with the phone.

The battery will provide the user with up to seven hours of talk time or three hundred & fifty hours of standby time from a fully charged battery.

Nice review, have you tested anything Sony Ericsson phone that doesn't have the Walkman player? How much does it differ?

And a slight correction, it is just Memory Stick Micro (M2), not Pro Duo M2.

Yes, I saw the phone in the Sony Store along with the K550. Hope they don't release this phone (probably will not) on Rogers or Fido cause it'll be like the W810, the phone everyone and their mom will have.

Great review, I am fan of Walkman phones, I love it.
It has a real good sound quality, it is easy to use Walkman but its tiny buttons are difficult to use and earbuds won't fit all ears.

seriously people dont buy this phone if your going to listen to music! its not worth it and also it has crap battery life so you people are better off going for the sony ericsson k750i even though its not walkman!!!

but the battery works fine for ma friends... but he says ring tone volume is low..
