We’ve had so much trouble reliably connecting at least one of our
Bluetooth phones to a laptop with a Bluetooth dongle that we gave up in frustration and bought a USB cable — and we
don’t like cables. So if there’s really a better way to connect, we’d like to know about it. Broadcom, which
makes Bluetooth chips, claims to have a better way with its new BLINK software, which the company says “provides users
with an intuitive graphical user interface that makes complex Bluetooth-related tasks as simple as browsing the
Internet, which encourages consumers to take advantage of the powerful features enabled by the ubiquitous wireless
technology.” We’re not convinced. While Broadcom has signed up a host of dongle-makers and networking companies to
package the software, it sounds like it just puts a friendly face on protocols that are already built into the phone.
And we don’t need a fancier dialog box to tell us we’ve lost a connection; we just need a more reliable connection.
