13 Year Old Texts 14,528 Messages In One Month

That's a lot of effort to probably say nothing, and way to much time on her hands.

This isn't exactly proud papa news: My daughter, Reina, who recently turned 13, just racked up 14,528 text messages in one month.
Thank God she's too young to drive.
Given that she's had a cell phone for less than six months, and she is supposed to share the phone with her 14-year-old brother (and use it mainly for emergencies) — well, I'm speechless.

Assuming my daughter slept an average of eight hours during the billing period (she usually sleeps more), that works out to 484 text messages a day.

The Nielsen study, of 50,000 cell phone users nationwide, found that people now use their cell phones more for texting than for talking. On average, each user sends 357 texts a month versus 204 voice calls a month.

wow - that's a little excessive

Now comes the question, where is she when she is sending 98% of those text messages?

Right next to the person she is texting? (like many in Japan do)
Texting anywhere and everywhere? (dinner table, class, with mom and dad)
While she is suppose to be doing other things? (and not actually doing those things)

Would interesting to see the time frame those text messages were being sent and received. I know when I was a child living at home, if my folks found out that I was spending that much time doing nothing, they would have found several things for me to do with all that free time. I know that for a lot of parents, as long as the kids are not in their hair or being pains in the rump roast, don't mind that they are online, playing video games, talking on the phone or what just plain doing nothing most of their waking hours.

The most important thing here is what aepple said about her driving. The texting craze is one thing. Those kids who are obsessed and get behind the wheel is another. They think they've become experts at "knee driving". Scary. Help spread the word to others.. see whatsinurbox twd

For a minute there i thought this article was about your daughter, it's a good thing Manako signed up for unlimited texting.

Here in LA we have the "no texting while drivin law" i still see the same amount of drivers if not more still texting.

She is averaging close to 500 texts a DAY! WOW!

Although, listening to satellite radio, I think maybe even on Howard Stern, they were talking about a girl who texted 269,000+ a year, with about 25K a month.. rediculous... and I thought one month I was almost up to 1500 was insane...

No matter how many laws they make, people will talk and text on their cell while driving. The world revolves by communications, nationally and internationally. I had a couch delivered the other day and the driver called because he was lost and needed directions.

Everyone uses a cell phone, from President B.O. to the furniture delivery guy to a 13 year old who texts 14k texts a month. Texting/talking with cell phones is a way of life today and each individual needs to use common sense when it.
