Cingular acquires AT&T Wireless for 41 billion dollars

ATLANTA, United States (AFP) - Cingular Wireless won a bidding war for AT&T Wireless with a staggering 41-billion-dollar offer, which would make it America's top mobile service provider.

The final bid -- the highest all-cash bid ever made in the United States, according to AT&T Wireless spokesman David Caouette -- left investors and credit assessors worried.

The price was too rich for the only other bidder, British giant Vodafone, already suffering on London's stock exchange as investors sweated over reports it had offered 38 billion dollars.

VIN or anyone. what does that mean for the millions of us on att? does this mean we will be moved over to cingular account, do we stay with att and get rollover mintues, or that att users don't get the 7pm night time minutes?

i have no idea i'm with sprint. i dunno if cingular is gonna screw at&t people over or what. i wonder if they'll be nice enough to waive the termination fee to kill your at&t account after the deal is complete. i mean you didnt sign up to be with cingular, you signed up for at&t service

i think they'll give u a chance either to stay with them or not. like they'll offer u a contract. possibly u mite just have to stay with them until ur contract is up originally wen at&t was solo.

I suppose it doesn't matter if you are AT&T or Cingular, as now AT&T is a daughter firm of Cingular. Much like the Hutch-Orange thing, both are the same company, mostly I don't think they'll force people out of atnt, but continue to send them bills, with a new logo, or maybe like this:
    AT&T
    Acquired by Cingular

    I just have a question:
If everyone says that Cingular sucks, it would mean that they don't get enough customers. But even then how did they manage to pump out $41 billion, this looks strange, or is there any bigger firm???

Or is this a conspiracy, like Vinnie's skynet thing at MB?

    EDIT: changed million to billion!

The 41 Billion in capital to acquire AT&T wireless is coming
from Cingular's parent companies, BellSouth and Southwestern
Bell. I don't believe Cingular itself is putting up a dime.

As for the transition....too early to tell. Until the merger actually
closes( passes AT&T shareholder approval and the required
Government checks), AT&T wireless will stay as it is. This is
not projected to happen until very close to the end of the year.

Mad is right its way to early to tell whats going to happen. But I got a call from Attws to tell customers who are worried about their service what will happen.

Nothing will change for exisiting Attws customer as far as their plan/contract. You signed that contract for one/two years and that thing goes both ways. They can't break it without penalties

The name is going to change but it might be At&t Cingular for At&T based stores for a while. Or something like ski said.

The biggest thing that is going to change is the coverage areas. Attws and cingulers towers are going to murge offering better coverage for both parties ESPECAILLY GSM coverage is now going to at least double.

I for one am happy as a pig in ****.

I dont' know how much microsoft is worth in all BUT i do know that microsoft a while back had programs write a program to control microsofts 'cash on hand' basically this big room with computers constantly investing money. Last time I heard it was at 80 billion dollars and made 30 billion last year. Investors are MUCHO pissed off because microsoft has been putting the profits back into this money pool and hasn't given any dividends to the investors. 80 billion just in researve monies not include the companies stock WOW.

soon as the ink drys its all cingular

Funny thing is ATTWS for some reason is thinking about starting ATTWS up again after Cingular buys it. Technically they could but they wouldn't have ANYTHING to startup with.

It should be a great network once the GSM overlay is done with capacity to go 3G in most markets. It will interesting to see what they need to sell off to get the FCC ok.

I'm a cingular user and i got a letter from cingular about what the acquistion will do. a lot of people here are asking really silly questions...
when i first got a cell phone it was with pac bell, that joined with other companies to become cingular. so this won't be the first time for me. the only change was the handset display, plus they started offering way better plans.
in response to some things people said, rollever isn't on every plan, and neither is the nights at 7. so just because ur with cingular doesn't mean u'll automatically get that. someone above asked if they would stay separate, which kinda defeats the purpose of a merger....
one thing that stuck in my mind reading this post was that someone said cingular doesn't have a lot of users, and they signed up for att not cingular. cingular did/does have lots of users. it's the combination of tons of once independent companies (not unlike verizon) and was third in us wireless companies before this merger.
i've had cingular since it was born and my best friend has always had att, and there's virtually no difference after they switched to gsm.
so the gsm takeover begins, i'm so happy...
