I would like to upgrade my existing phone, however, Cingular does not permit you to do so unless your contract ends, which as many know lasts for 1-2 years.

I have heard about these SIM cards, cards in your phones that store your #, info, etc

Is it possible to swap the SIM in your exising GSM phone into a new phone that you purchased on your own, and get service, your same #, etc??

See More: Switching phones, can you switch the SIM?

yes! that possible. just make sure if you have a cingular sim card get any kind of cingular phone and just put the sim to your new cingular phone and all the info will go to tha new phone. but if you have a cingular sim and t-mobile phone that will not work. each phone is luck to thier service provider. if you have cingular sim and unlock phone that's the best! unlock phone will allow you to go to any service provider (cingular,at&t t-mobile) by just changing the sim card.

What kind of phone do you have? There are free or cheap unlocking services online. Some brands of phones can be unlocked with a code. Easy. Some phones need to be unlocked with a special data cable hooked up to a computer with special software. If you play with it too much though you can mess it up, requiring a PUK unlock code. Or just buy an unlocked phone in the first place from a third party seller.

Correct, sprint uses CMDA. Cingular uses GSM with sim cards and isn't compatible with CDMA.
