I'm currently under contract with Cingular, and I killed my v551. It's obvious that I can stick my SIM card into a phone that's unlocked. Regarding buying from the actual Cingular store... do they sell you unlocked phones? Do they sell you a phone just to sell it to you without you actually signing up for another contract or doing an activation fee so you can stick your current SIM card in it? How much more money is it usually?

Yes you can but you have to pay retail price, if you're going to go that route you're better off going to an idependent store and buying an unbranded unlocked phone, Cingular does not sell unlocked phones but if you're gonna use your Cingular sim card that will not matter will it?

you recommend buying an unlocked phone for an upgrade. any recommendations on where to buy, what to look for, etc..
i'm under the impression that i just have to swap out my sim card from my lg phone (cingular) into my new unlocked phone and i'm good to go.
is this right? or am i missing a step. i'd like to upgrade without buying from a store for a billion dollars or extending my contract.

yes, when you buy an unlocked compatable phone for your carrier all you do is insert your sim card and you're good to go...

Thanks, Tony. You're quite the guy, helping all of us dummies out. I'll say, I knew nothing about the whole GSM thing, unlocked phones, and SIMs until I joined this forum. You individually put out a lot of great info.
Thanks!
