I don't know anything about MetroPCS, but I have Sprint PCS and they use CDMA phones. Cingular uses GSM phones, and the technologies are not compatible. In most cases, you must purchase a phone that was previously used with the same service provider, but this is not always true.

Even if MetroPCS can activate other companies' phones, it would have to be the same kind of phone, GSM (uses a sim card) and CDMA (no sim card), and most companies are one or the other, I don't think anybody uses both. if they are GSM, then you would need one of their sim cards and you'd have to unlock the phone (make it useable by other service providers).

    here's $100 for asking a good question.

    Could be posible

I know that Cingular will sell you the phone a "full price" if you don't sign a contract with them. I have never done it but I would guess you could then take the phone to another provider using GSM.

MetroPCS is CDMA, so a Cingular phone won't work on it. I just confirmed that info on PhoneScoop.com:

"MetroPCS offers local wireless phone service to customers in and around the metropolitan areas of Atlanta, Miami, Tampa, and San Francisco / Sacramento. MetroPCS provides one monthly cost and one plan with unlimited anytime minutes, competitive long distance rates and no contract. The MetroPCS network was built from the ground up using third-generation CDMA2000 1xRTT technology."
