I live in California, which taxes cell phone bills at about 17.5%
But I did found out the town I live in does not impose a tax on cell phones.
So I went ahead and ordered Cingular for 2 years with the free Nokia 6102
They tried to add $21.95 for the ear plug.
If i find I have a poor signal in my area,
what is the best way to drop Cingular (in the first 30 days)?

Well you'll know if you have poor signal in less than a week, so your best bet would be to take the phone back after a week or two, cause it won't get better at 30 days if it's not very good at 10 days. If it were me I would not wait an entire 30 days if I had poor signal at home, school or work, or anywhere I spend a great deal of time.
Then I'd move on to the next provider to see if their signal was any better.

I am cingular employee
Any time you buy our service you have a 30 days buyers remorse period. This mean you have 30 days to try service and if you don't like it you can return handset to place of purcahse and they will cancel your service without penalty. Also you can switch out your handset to another one within the 1st 30 days and see if it improves your reception. The worst brand of handsets to use on cingular service is motorola, they suck. I+Try a higher end nokia or go for the Sony ericsson w600i ( it is the best phone we currently sell)
As long as you can cel within the 1st 30 days you will not be charged early termination fee's. All you wil pay is the $36 activation fee (is only refunded in cancelled within the first 3 days of service) and you will pay prorated charge for the amount of time you had service. Ex: if you have $39.99 plan and you have service for 1 week you will only pay $9.99.
Also if you want to try and imprve reception, call the and ask them to update your sim card. They will send you updates that allow your sim card to connect more easily to the network. Finally make sure you power off and on your phone at least every second day to get new connection to network. Oh yeah with any GSM service signal sucks indoors, this problem is not fixable although the brand of phone you choose can make some difference

My Nokia 6102 arrived yesterday, I drove 8 miles to downtown while talking (on the phone) to my buddy, the connection never dropped, It connects every time (so far). I'm really happy with it.

How I came to that conclusion isi sell and supprt cell phone 40-50 hours a week. The average user of motorola phone swaps through warranty exchane 3-5 a year. However a user of the W600i or any nokia product will very rarely complain pr have issues. And yes I agree LG sucks to, but less complaints then motorola V series( v180, v220,v551,v557, V3 razr)

I respect the opinion but its not accurate. What department xbm, dmdr, cust care, retail store or agent?? What you have to understand is the average exchange isnt because the phne is faulty its b/c the user normally has no idea what they are doing with the phne. It may not get service in an particular area and they think it is defective. my personal favorite is it keeps turning itself off.. thats normally solved by charging the battery. The main reason motorola is exchanged is b/c its normally too complicated for the average user. check user ratings on particular models...see for youself

Take the phone every place that is important to you to have service. Work, friends, relatives, or other places you travel often and need service. A liitle time and gas now is much better than a service you may not like due to poor reception and not being able to cancel because of a heafty termination fee.
