    Re: cingular stores

I was surprised at how few phones the store carries in my area. Even online, they only show about what- 20 or 25? Given that there are hundreds of cell phones available this seems kind of odd to me.

I'm trying to find a non-Razr stainless steel clamshell phone and can't find a thing (except for the Nokia 8801). I think my old Motorola v60i looks better than just about every phone I've looked at- they're all plastic now.

The reason why cingular stores and the cingular site dont show that many phones, is because many of the phones dont work with the cingular network. In order to use those other phones with cingular you have to get an unlocked and unbanded phone. Since cingular wants you buying phones from them, they show you the phones that work for them.

    Re: cingular stores

Not true. There are still some phones that are not listed on the website that are still recognized in the Cingular database. Some stores carry certain phone models that you will not find in other areas...that's why on the website it asks you for your zip code before doing a phone search. The reason why you see the phones that are available is because of "agreements" between the service provider (in this case Cingular) and the phones' manufacturer, so that the consumer will be able to get a certain phone at a discounted price when he/she wishes to sign on with the carrier. You can still buy a GSM phone on certain stores at full retail price, but you are not obligated to sign on with a carrier. A carrier won't deny you service because you went and bought an unlocked phone, because all you want is the service. You ask for activation and your SIM card is sent to you. And besides, what's wrong with getting a phone that is with Cingular if it's free. If you don't like the phone, sell it and get the one that you want as long as you have what is important, your service (which is in that SIM card). Where are you basing your information from?
