I'm thinking about buying the E62 with a cingular data plan. I've heard that EDGE is very slow (just barely faster than dial-up). Is this something that should concern me if I am going to primarily use it for business e-mail purposes? Can I tether this connection to a laptop if I wanted to (I know verizon charges extra)?

Other than that, if anyone has anything to say about the E62 it would be greatly appreciated.

Edge is faster than dial up. However alot of things can affect the speed, including how busy the cell tower is, and how strong your signal is. In general, though, you should get speeds 2 to 3 times faster than dial up. It works fine for email. As far as tethering goes, it depends upon your data plan.

    Re: Cingular Data Questions

it depends on where you live... i live in a very rural area, where my previous phones were painfully slow on the internet... but with my Nokia e62 they are now about 65kbps (more than twice what i was getting) and that is with gprs.... so its not bad... i have 3 mbps down dsl at home, and i can manage it.... so i don't see why anyone would really need something much faster on their phone (as i am a web designer, a webhosting company, a paranormal group leader, and also a search engine owner)

if you are looking for tethering i recommend the samsung black jack or 8525. hsdpa speeds are addicting and if all else fails you fall back to edge. hsdpa goes up to four megabits/second but i average 1.8 megabits

    Re: Cingular Data Questions

If you are going to use a phone as a modem you need the appropriate data plan.
Which costs extra no matter what the carrier is. If you are going to be doing a lot of tethering you may want to look into a pccard for that.
As far as phones go, what do you want in a phone? Cingular as some nice 3g phones, and will give high speeds for tethering.
Both the 8525 and the Blackjack are 3g and can do about everything the e62 can.

    Re: Cingular Data Questions

The PC cards are good I recommend the Option GT Max since it has international 3G capabilities. But if you had to get a 3G phone I would recommend the 8525 hands down, larger qwerty, higher res camera, WIFI!!!! This is more of a professional phone than the black jack. The BlackJack is marketed much like the Motorola Q was however it is becoming more of an "in" phone, like the Q. For the price I would get the 8525 and use it to tether with it when you need becaue the tethering package for non Blackberry devices is same as the data plan for a laptop card.

    Re: Cingular Data Questions

actually last i checked it has expanded to closer to thirty cities and we are still expanding it. also even though the phones are hsdpa they do fall back to edge when not in a 3g area. also the black Jack and 8525 have the international 3g frequency for in case you wished to travel with the device. also keep in mind that they are always expanding the 3g coverage area

    Re: Cingular Data Questions

I live in an area that has EDGE... but the EDGE is almost the same speed as GSM data here... that is how out in the sticks i am.... not gonna be in places like this... HSDPA phone = pointless for me.... and also in a town near here, that has 23,000 people cingular doesnt even have a tower.... but they have 3 in Quincy, IL which is approximately 45,000 people, that is where the EDGE is barely anything.... they also told me they "do not know where we will expand next, but we are constantly expanding our 3G network, there is no planned expansion map for us to look at, sorry"
