OK, so the Pearl plays MP3s. My friendly rep at the Cingular store told me I have to subscribe to their supper dupper media package in order to get songs on the phone. Is this true. No way to simply upload my favorites that I've already bought?

Can you assign different MP3s to different numbers as ringtones?

You can link it to your computer by plugging in the supplied data cable and transfer songs to the phone. But your going to want a large micro sd card.

    Thanks Jimbo. Good info.

By the way, we could use someone like you over in the CPF Blackberry forum. I'm sitting on the fence about moving from my Motorola V3i (which I love) to the Pearl. I almost drove over to the store last night to get one and then I told myself to wait a few more days. I've played with the Pearl off and on and there are things I like about it and things I'm not sure about. Bottom line though is there doesn't seem to be ANY well informed regulars here who visit the Blackberry forum. LOL, I actually asked the other day about Vista compatibility for RIM's sync software and had to answer my own question there because the Blackberry forum is such a lonely space. You may want to pop in over there.

I don't own a blackberry myself I only new the answers because I have been doing a lot of research about the pearl. I really wanted the pearl but I didn't realize you had to subscribe to the ultra expensive blackberry plan in order to check your email and go online. You cant go online AT ALL without purchasing the plan. I was really disappointed. As if these cell phone companies don't make enough money already.

I would however be interested in buying your V3i from you. I have a razor and Im looking for something a little more.

Let me know if you want to sell it.

    Thanks
    Jim

Good post. Aside from the price on the data plan issue, were there any major pluses or minuses that caught your eye when you were doing your research? I haven't made my final decision yet about the Pearl. This is actually kind of wierd for me because usually I'm pretty decisive about these kind of things. But I really like my V3i and am not totally convinced that the Pearl will do much more if anything more than my V3i.

Nope all plus's. I liked the phone a lot but Its not worth the extra $45/month to me just to access the internet which I can already do on my razer for free. I really liked the pearl, Its too bad they soak you for so much money.

Good luck on your decision. If you decide to buy the pearl, let me know if you want to sell your V3i. [email protected]

If you're thinking of getting the pearl but dont want to pay for the media package... I would consider going with a wi-fi enabled smartphone (Tmobile SDA,DASH) or even a wi-fi enabled PPC phone(Cingular 8125,8525)...
This will give you the option to use internet wherever you can find a wi-fi hotspot(check out wi-fihotspotlist.com) and youll avoid the $40 a month internet package...
