Cingular didn't merge with AT&T. It is still the old Cingular with the name "AT&T". However once the original merger took place between the old "AT&T Wireless" over to "Cingular" there were a few roaming agreements that were taken away between some of the other GSM carriers.......Do you know if you were roaming onto any other towers during the last 2-3 years? I have read on several of these forums where other Cingular customers have been effected by these changes.
Just a thought here, you may want to have AT&T take a look a your SIM card and your handset to make sure they are working properly.
